anti-virus software

I used the search function to check but got no response.
So my question is what is the best anti-virus program to use?
Norten & MacAfee seem to be a pain in the butt to use.
Any input appreciated.

Avira Anti-virus.  It's free and has very low overhead.  It's caught more malware and viruses for me than Norton or AVG ever did.

Ideally, you need to run Anti-Malware every so often as well.   I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - also free.

I'll tell ya, I didn't have much in the way of expectations, but I've gotten some good use out of the Microsoft Security Essentials.  Low resource load, no conflicts or issues, and fairly inconspicuous.

That's just for anti-virus.  Like Cheese said, I've got a couple of utilities I use to tune things up periodically.  MBAM is one of mine as well.  I also use CCleaner too.

Have two computers on mind i use mcafee along with windows definder works good for me can ture mcafee off in windows definder on the other one use avast an malware both is free dw load

I have to agree with you.  I used to use Avast but their most recent update bloated the heck out of it.  I switched to Security Essentials and am quite pleased with it.  It's not resource hungry at all.  I don't even need to shut it down when I play.

I'm using Eset Nod 32 version 4 and it works great for me.

I think the consensus on Norton is that it eats up a lot of resources, and when it comes time to uninstall, its practically as hard as a virus to get rid of...  Someone else can expound if needed...

You cannot get rid of it unless you use everything in the book to do so. Anything short of a complete reinstallation of the OS will probably not be enough. It uses resources like crazy, and it is like a wet paper bag when it comes to some viruses. The firewall is a complete and total female dog (I actually typed that) and turning it off doesn't mean a thing. Not only will the firewall still be present, it can also interfere with AH, severely. It was definitely not designed for gaming systems.

Wildcat I've never had 1 problem with viruses firewall problems with AH.  Heck I download all the pr0n I want and still has no affect on my cp.

My thanks to everyone for the feedback.
I had a major meltdown and had to reload everything.
Since I was running a dual hard drive system as a RAID 0; no back up, I was up that familiar creek without a paddle.
One of my hard drives had become corrupted.

Bought an external hard drive and saved my personal files, about 23 gigs, before I tried to reinstall everything.
I used to use Norton Ghost and MacAfee before I went RAID 0.
I think I'll try the MS Essentials and see how that goes.
If I'm not happy then I'll try one of the other suggestions.

Backwhen I had Norton, a simple mis-click could put a drive-by downloader on the comp. Norton didn't do squat. The firewall was pretty bad, even with Windows firewall turned off, but maybe it was with certain OS's.

Norton is a problem to have with any gaming system, IMO (that's with my experiences). McAfee and AVG I've heard are just about as bad, but I don't know this for sure. Avast and ESET I have heard are great, and I use Malwarebytes to get pretty much anything off the comp that slips by the regular AV. Good luck!
