weather
« on: July 26, 2011, 02:15:46 AM »
I am sure this has been wished before so ill just make this topic as a reminder.

the maps are big, the idea is that there are 3 countries with their fronts figthing etc... but the weather is all the same in every single place

what about some places with fog, what about rain or bad winds in some periods of the day etc... it could be completly random you know? like you plan a mission but then you get to a place and the weather is not so good.. well there is plenty of ideas that can come up with this, the lower visibily caused by fog... the confusion in rainy times etc... may we discuss?

I'd say plus one if you can see the weather movement or that's in the region.

Weather recce aircraft? The PBY Catalina, Condor? Oh yeh - cool. +1  :aok

Provided weather doesn't dominate the map though - most players won't like it.
Here we are, living on top of a molten ball of rock, spinning around at a 1,000mph, orbiting a nuclear fireball and whizzing through space at half-a-million miles per hour. Most of us believe in super-beings which for some reason need to be praised for setting this up. This, apparently, is normal.

Agreed.

Maybe one or two weather fronts moving slooowly around the edges of the 'world' - but not automatically painted on the map. A weather plane has to 'spot' the front and mark it on the map with a stationary point. The mark is invalidated (disappears) after, say, 20 mins.

Long range bombers would sometimes need that weather info, and if you're hiding a CV in bad weather you'd need that weather info too.

I like it. Gives us a use for weather recce flights, and a need for recce planes - otherwise they're pointless.

Clouds can be added by the map's designer, and often times are. Depending on the altitude, they can be (and have been) used as fog banks. Clouds are added in clusters, with altitude, size, drift speed and direction, duration (lifetime) and time before respawning. So, if a map designer wishes to, he can create local cloud cover in spots all over the map so some places are socked in and some places are clear.

There you go then! We've already got a start.

I wonder how reduced visibility (i.e. rain) would affect GV battles.

World War 2 was a fair-weather fight.

When the weather was bad, you didn't fight.

To that end this is a GAME, and the best most suited environment that is conducive to FIGHTING (as opposed to hiding, evading, doing stuff without detection, etc), is a clear sunny day. That also reflects most of the days fighters and bombers would engage each other in aerial combat, so it works out both ways.

EDIT: If you want a more robust cloud system that's one thing, but fog? Slamming rain? Terrible winds? Sorry, those ground planes in real life.

Yes. No weather please. Might be used in special events but no need for it in the MA.
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

you cant see as far..

next time smpizza is up, go sit at a port. you'll see the fog. reduces down to about 1 mile visibility

also, having more clouds and "weather" would cause drains on a lot of computers. Which means they would have to have a switch to turn down the clouds and weather. Once they add the switch, EVERYONE will switch it off.
