Cooling fan(s) run all the time? Any ideas? Solutions?

overheating, may need some summer cleaning.  or it may be just to hot in your room.  mine turns into a steam room after about 1 hour of playing with the door closed.  and that's with the ac on.

If your fans are plugged straight into a motherboard fan socket then yes they'd all run all the time. Some with PWM control might run faster or slower depending on load or temp but that's a setting you'd make either in software or the BIOS (or UEFI if you have one of the newer boards).

There are some add-on fan controllers that will actually turn a fan off in addition to giving you manual adjustment to the speed. This one for example from  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811995075   Gives you control over 6 different PWM or non PWM fans and will also switch them off if you want.

 As for cooling fans always running, that's just how they work.  Unless it's on Automatic settings (such as a CPU Cooler), it'll always be running near max.  No computer fan should be off unless it's an excess fan anyways, CPU/GPU/PSU ones aren't in that category.  If powered via pure Molex there is no way to control it and it runs near max, if it is controlled via 3/4-pin then the Motherboard will auto control it for best temps, or with the right software you can.
 I run all my fans 100% for best cooling, but if it gets a bit warm here at times so I tried to keep it cool as best I can to avoid any heat issues.

Another Temp reading software program is AIDA64 which looks like:




If the fans are running too high, then it's likely, as mentioned, a heat issue possibly caused by dirt/dust/grime.  Any of the mentioned programs will work to help determine that.

They should be set to high performance unless you're running with a laptop on battery.

Great goglymogly! Yeah you gots some hot stuff goin on there. CPU temp at 52c? That's not idle temp is it? Looks to me like you really need to get some things together insofar as your cooling goes. In the computing world mo coolah mo bettah. High temps like that are breaking a cardinal rule.

My stuff currently at generally idle (just this window open). I have Qfan enabled on my mobo that controls the CPU fan speed up or down depending on load. I have several other fans on my case that I control with a 6 channel Zalman controller and I have most of the ins on a lower setting with the outs at a higher setting but they're all turned down for this activity. I turn stuff up for gaming.

Yep, those are my idle temps.  They are a tad high, huh...  I might have to get in there and try to improve the airflow somehow.

temps in the low 30's are pretty good for air cooled during the summer.  keep in mind temps normally go up during the summer due to well the summer.  so your putter will run hotter in summer than in winter.  unless you live hawaii or virgin islands or something like that in which case it's hot all the time.  cpu fans are on all the time.  most time you wont hear them because they run at low settings.  when it gets loud is when it's running faster.  most likely you need to clean the inside of your case, look for dust bunnies.  specially in the cooler/cpu fan itself.  that maybe all you need.

btw it looks like the max safe temp for your cpu is 61.  get speedfan and it has a log option that will tell you the temp from idle to under stress then you can compare make sure it really is not running hot.

The Cooler Master should run you about $30+ and will work great with most. Check the height to make sure it'll fit in your case. The Zalmans work great but are also more expensive. I'm running a 9900Max on mine. Got it on EBay refurbished for $37--it's a $89 item at Newegg. Look for a guy named refurdoc. He sells Zalman stuff. Have bought a few coolers from him as well as my fan controller. All good.

look at the second picture, that's 32 at idle, which is about average.  the worry is what the temp is at full speed.

Well the second pic isn't of Coogan's PC, it's of 1701E's which is normal. The next one is of mine.

Yeah I was wondering what a full load temp would be on that machine. Coogan please don't try to show us!!!! I'm thinking jets of flame might come out.

Regardless some actual cooling on that machine would be in order. Might start with the CPU cooler and a new case with some actual ventilation in it and go from there. No need to break the bank.
 
I might add if your CPU fan is running high and this is the best it can do you might have problems with either a very high ambient temp. Hey if it's sitting in a very hot room it only has so much to work with. OR--the CPU heat sink might not be properly seated. That would cause the high temps too. Try taking it off, cleaning both the heat sink and CPU surfaces with some goof-off, wipe clean with alcohol after that and apply about a smaller than a bb sized dot of Actic Silver in the center, then re-seat it. See if that doesn't help.

Of course if the thing's covered with crud and dust that will mess you up too. It's all about heat transfer and heat dissipation. Bad contact with the heat sink will get bad transfer and dust on the cooling fan will ruin your heat dissipation.
