Warthog setup
« on: August 15, 2011, 04:22:56 AM »
I have returned to AH after a break of some 8 to 10 years.  Still trying to get back into the swing of the basic things, quite a bit has changed.
I bought a Thrustmaster Warthog at the weekend, I used to used the Cougar but my wife (Flossy) has that now.  I was wondering if anyone had some guidance of setups for the Warthog in AH.  I havent loaded the T.A.R.G.E.T software yet as it looks like I can do most things by mapping the buttons in AH.  However I suspect I am going to need something more flexible in the setup soon which will need the Target software installed. If I install Target does that mean I won't have the ability to use the Warthog in it's default setting and mapped out in AH as I am doing now or will I still have that ability.  Is the Warthog setup when programmed via Target stored within the joystick and throttle as I seem to remember it did on the Cougar when setup with Foxy.  That way would only need the setup sent to it if it had been changed for any reason.  Most of the switches on the throttle seem to be the unsprung type which I don't think is much use in AH unless something can be done with Target.  The spring loaded ones will probably be ok as they will look more like pressing a key.  The unsprung type will look like I am holding a key down if left on.  So any pointers on setups will be much appreciated.

You don't need to use TARGET and if you do use it you can still have switches mapped to DX defaults. I assume you're used to U/M/D and I/O from the Cougar. Yo can do that with TARGET also but it runs as a virtual device so the settings are not stored in the stick.

All the switches look like key presses to AH but if a switch is on when you start AH it reads it as a button press when the game loads.

Remember you can also set up multiple command sets in AH using stick modes.

Thats making a bit more sense.  I am surprised the settings are not stored in the stick as I am sure it was in the Cougar as that was a big selling point at the time.  No processing needed external to the controllers etc.  So if I load Target do I get what appears to be another device appear in the controllers in AH.  At the moment in the controllers setting in AH I have three controllers in the pulldown. CH stick, CH throttle and Saitek rudder pedals. Does installing TARGET then effectively give another in the listing?

I noticed all the stitches looked like key presses, but thought as some were not spring loaded to return when you released them then they would look like a stuck key to AH and cause problems that way.
I don't think stick modes in AH were around when I last played so thats something I have to read up on.

For views I use the top right hat on the stick as thats what I used to use on the Cougar.  Still not sure what to use as an up view though.  At the moment I am using the bottom red button under the trigger at the front of the stick.  Not convinced its the best yet though. I am hoping a number of people use the Warthog and might chime in with experience they have gained in configuring for AH up.

Hey guys I have a Warthog too.  Haven't loaded the software; just configured within AH.  I love the toggle switches, and have not had a problem with them appearing as a "stuck" keypress.

The thing I'd like to solve, and this may require using the software, is that I'd like both the toggle 'on' and togge 'off' recognized as a button press.  Currently is only the 'on' that is recognized.

I dunno how many Warthog users are here but I'm hoping we can eventually have a sticky thread.

I did prefer the stronger springs in the Cougar; however don't mess the sloppy center-play.   Another problem I seem to have is guns cutting out if I don't keep strong pressure on the finger trigger when firing using the second-stage trigger.

Zeb when you load TARGET it just loads as another program. You don't see another controller in the AH drop down list but instead you will just see a combined virtual controller which if I remember is called just the Warthog. I haven't used TARGET with AH in several months so I really don't remember exactly.

I have all my needed buttons mapped to the stick and throttle within AH and it gets a little confusing. I wish there was a way to print out your button layout like there with from TARGET for commands in other non-TARGET mapped games.

Thank's for that Reschke. I will probably try to do everything without the Target software, but I have installed it.  I don't see any virtual controller though.  Where does that show up.

I think it only shows up when you actually setup and use the Warthog in game AFTER compiling and starting your profile. If you are looking for more info on the setup and how to work in TARGET take a look at the dedicated forum over at SimHQ on that.

Zeb you can use the pinky button as an "up" modifier or you can use it as a "mode 2" switch which allows you to modify any or all inputs  instead of just the "up" view. Copy stick mode 1 to stick mode 2 and then modify any command in stick mode 2 that you wish to be different from mode 1. This lets you use the pinky button as an in/out button without using TARGET.
