short tutorial for new players
« on: August 18, 2011, 10:01:05 AM »
Now i realize there is to much in AH to really put into a tutorial but it would be nice to have a small basic tutorial that new players must go threw before entering the online arenas. As im sure im not the only one who has been asked how do i start my engine, how do i open bomb doors, how do i end flight, how do i move bases, how do i drop bombs. How do i shoot rockets, ... and so on and while most ppl are willing to help, useally there’s a large bunch who say press alt f4(which ive seen work 3 times)

so basic tutorial would cover say

moving bases (ending sortie/moving airfeilds/proper landing?)

Flight basics(Weapon selection/gears/doors/engines?)

Cv basics(selecting gun/land mode/seamode?/lvts?)

Gv basics(driving/spawning/aiming/he/ap?)

Good guy/bad guys(green=good red=bad... shoot the red)

r-dar(dar bars/r-dar rings)

base captures(differance between v-base/AF and victory requirements?)

Now again its not suppose be a massive tutorial becuase i honestly think just about everyone hates them but this would make it a tad easier on new players for a basic understanding of how things work without getting told press alt f4 getting fed up and never logging back in as some ppl take that seriously

now i know there’s plenty of guides out there and things to help but almost no one ever reads them who is new. And i just think having new ppl watch(preferably) or read a basic tutorial before joining online would help as AH is a bit more complicated then your average online game and just "jumping into the action" useally doesn’t work especially when your trying to kill you teammates or shoot your own buildings...ect it comes in all forms

so my wish is a basic tutorial that NEW players have to read/watch before logging onto online arenas that way the current ppl dont get flooded with questions and the new ppl actually have a chance to enjoy the game and not get told alt f4...

and obviously the content of the tutorial would be subject to change as what classifys as "basic" but only 5-10 min(vid wise) max?

Questions? Thoughts? Terrible idea? Good idea?

It's a good idea to have the new guys start off with this: http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/ -- Most of the topics that you mention here are covered.

There's actually a few visual tutorials that Fugitive made a little while back that are really helpful.

Nothing stopping you from making your own basic tutorial video on youtube that outlines exactly what you listed and then directing new players to it when they ask for help.
The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

your missing the point here most new players dont useally bother to look into things that are already there theres plenty of info out there...but most ppl dont care to look for it or find out or have no clue its out there...even if you refer them to somthing its rare they actaully look into it...a short video explaining the basics at login to online arenas for new players would just elimate painfully obvious questions ppl saying press alt f4 and ppl trying to kill their team aswell as giving new players a chance to enjoy the game without getting fed up.

I wish there was an arena message that popped up with a few notes each and everytime a person logged on saying "For new players, please reference [link] for "how to" items and know that AH is not a flight simulator/combat sim that can be learned in 1 day or even 1 week."  or something to that effect.

I do my best to try and help new players when they need it, but I can only type so much so fast.  :)

a year or two ago I tried a fighter game that required a tutorial to be completed before playing online.  I spent about two hours trying to finish it, got really frustrated quit and deleted the game. I had questions x and there was nobody around to help me.

     It's fine having a tutorial, but how are you going to make sure the newb uses it?  I admit to being a touch old
school, but when I started you either read or politely asked a question.  Hand holding new guys to make sure they
don't quit can be exhausting.

     I personally would like the other guy to have enough interest to try to learn the system and expend some effort.
Sort of like in the old days when you actually got letter grades and teams sometimes lost and felt bad about it.

@rino
well the idea more so is that the basics are covered and they can progress from there such as starting engines but in order to make sure they watch it...have new accounts have it play on the first time the account trys to log into the online servers so theres no getting around it.

@vudu

as much as that would be helpfull theres still the issue of getting them to watch it

@guncrusher
and...thats why most ppl hate tutorials but this would be short and quick covering basics and be around 5-10 mins not getting stuck thinking well wth do i do now or is it ever going to end? just a nice short vid with simple explanations

@bbosen
nice work if you did all that but thats the really long tutorial that this would be avoiding jsut to get new players off the runway...(btw 4.99 is much more magical number)

@smokinloon
i like that idea

I'm all for a tutorial, a lot of things have been changed and added to the game recently. However, its hard to help someone who is unwilling to help themselves first. When I started this game at the tender young age of 18, I printed out, read and reread just about every major detail involving the game play and got the feel for the flight systems offline before I even subscribed to be an online player. This game requires patience as much as anything to learn well and learn correctly. So many people want to be spoon fed every little detail just to end up "gaming the game".

my idea is for the basics to be covered in a short video tutorial explaining how to pick a plane, set fuel, ordanace,and select runway direction. they can progress from there such as starting engines but in order to make sure they watch it...HTC set it up that all new accounts have it play on the first time the account trys to log into the online servers so theres no getting around it.

I did some minor editing to your idea, stabbyy

I would also recommend that each new account for online play be tied to the Aces High MessageBoards/Forum, to where either before or right after they watch the short video tutorial, they have to at minimal register to the forums as well..... and make at least one post, which will include them requiring to post their ingame gameid.

they could make the post to a specific thread that is titled like "Hello, I am New to Aces High"  or "Welcome to Aces High", etc......

then they would at least know the forums exisit.......and not stumble across them several years after the fact....

i like that idea maybe give new players theyre own topic entirely and call it somthing like "new players to aces high" but selecting plane ive never seen anyone have trouble with... and starting direction should be included but ords loadout is pretty simplistic and so is the fuel but i guess it would be good to have them both included although i cant say ive ever been asked how to load fuel/ords... on that note

but the forum thing most def. i would be one of those ppl who stumbled opoun them

First section should teach new players about proper etiquette in a ship/shore battery. If you don't know how to shoot the the thing then get out of it and let someone who does know in it. And for pete's sake quit shelling the town after we've capped it! Lol

yeah ive seen that one alot same with shooting taking off aircraft/shooting your own ships but on guns its kind of first come first serve but they should know how to use them/what they are doing before they do jump in them
