AAR-28-08-1943
I flew with Trukk78,Sik1, Rauh, and Chemdawg in JG54, along with Devil505 from the JG11; we operated out of A-49. On our first sortie we climbed out on a north east heading with a target alt of 27k, at which time we turn north for the coast, north of A-60 we turned and followed the coastline back to the west looking for the bomber stream.
We picked up the bomber stream at roughly 24k, just to the west of A-60; they had P47's as escort and they were co-alt with us. As we closed in on the bombers the escorts spotted us and turned in; we decided to maintain our heading right past the escorts, hoping they would fall back on the turn in on us. We did manage to get a pass on the bombers with our rockets, Chemdawg got a direct hit on a Bomber with a rocket and it immediately blew up in flight. The bomber escorts did knock down two of our FW-190's; the pilots Trukk78 and Devil505, both bailed out and survived, but were unable to get back to their airbase. Chemdawg, Ruah and myself RTB'd to A-49 and immediately relaunched, in fresh FW-190's, to hit the bombers on their return leg home.
On the way to intercept, we lost Rauh to engine problems (discoed), but Chemdawg and I caught up to the bombers and initiated a rocket attack, but had no success in hitting any enemy bombers. At this time my aircraft took a hit in the engine and I had a large volume of oil on my windscreen, forcing me to RTB to the nearest base, which I did successfully at A-71. Chemdawg and I relaunched out of A-49 hoping for another run on the bombers, but as we started climb out we spotted enemy fighters diving in on us and had to turn back to the field for cover. They kept us tied up low for a while there, but I was able to break out to the south east and start climbing to the bombers again, but the enemy fighters had costs me too much time and I was 10k too low as the bombers went by. I turned in hopes of catching them, but ran into some more enemy fighters and was forced to abort the chase.
At this time, I discovered Chemdawg down low in a slow turn fight with a P-47, so I started for him to assist; while I was closing in on the fight, two more P-47's joined in on his tail and I saw him splash into the sea. At this point I made a high speed pass on them and turned for home with 6 minutes of fuel remaining; I RTB'd to A-46 on fumes, ending the Axis defensive actions for the evening.
