Cancer
« on: August 23, 2011, 02:12:41 PM »
Yeah that's it. Get checked guys.

My dad was diagnosed with Colon Cancer on Friday. He had a scan done yesterday revealing that it has spread.. including into his liver. We've got an appointment in the morning with a surgeon to discuss a plan of action but he's already been warned to prepare himself for some very sobering news.

The thing is that he's not been feeling well for over three months now and his doctor has been trying to talk him into getting a colonoscopy for almost a year. Being a proud and stubborn man he's not mentioned any of this to any of us until last week! Had he heeded this advice it would have been caught much, MUCH sooner and the prognosis would have a much better outlook.

It's all "coulda, woulda, shoulda" at this point so please PLEASE learn from this and see your doctor regularly and report anything suspicious. I know that we all joke about procedures like that but the simple truth is the procedure is *NOT* that big of a deal and it's a few hours out of your life that... well think of it as an investment in your future. A medical procedure NO MATTER WHAT TYPE does not make you any less of a man.

For the record he's only 62 years old and otherwise in great health. He's my best friend and is the type of guy that would give you the shirt off of his back, even if it meant him freezing to death in the process.

I'm not looking forward to the weeks ahead so please find time to work my dad Kenny into your prayers. He going to need all the help he can get - both spiritually and technologically.

God bless, guys!

Just so happens I am set up for another check.  My Mother died at 54 yrs of age from colon cancer.   Hope your Dad recovers.

I have had a spot on my forearm for just about as long as I can remember (sometimes they are called age spots or coffee marks). This mark was not raised or "discolored", so I never gave it much thought. Anyway about two months ago I noticed that this mark had changed shape. I went to my doctor who sent me to a dermatologist. He took a scraping saying it was probably nothing. Two days later he called back and said get in here NOW! He said it was a "regressive" melanoma. This means the melanoma was breaking down and casting off cancerous cells. I went back in the next day and he remove a diamond shaped piece of skin 3"x"2" and about 1/8 deep (I now have a scar that looks like a shark bite). They sent the sample to a specialist in Columbia hospital in NYC. He called me back later and said I was one lucky man. The cancerous cells hadn't left the local area. I had literally caught it in the nick of time. He said that if I had even waited a week, I would definately be going through radiation/chemo now, with a 50/50 chance of survival. Now I have to go back every 3 months for a full body scan, forever. There's no telling how or where I got it, though I am outdoors a lot, and I never wore sunblock. I also don't have a history of this in my family. Now I treat the sun as an enemy that I must defend against. Oh yeah, I'm 59 years old.

So listen to what Tigger29 says. If you see something that doesn't look right, get it checked!!!

<S> to both you guys. red i remember when you first posted about your dad's cancer. Now i understand how hard it is to deal with. My mom almost lost her life to breast cancer when her kidneys both chose to shut down due to it metastisizing to them and the liver.. we thought she had the flu because she was in pain and throwing up. come to find out if we were a few days later we would have lost her to kidney poisoning. a week later they found the tumor in her breast.

Tigger stay strong bud. I'm learning right alongside of you and red and it's hard but if you keep your head high you will get through any rough times in the road ahead. we're months into our own road now and 3 chemo sessions in. Tigger if it was caught early enough which it seems it is then it can only get better bud. <S>

Red my old friend, how's your family and especially you and your dad doing? i havent seen you on here or talked to you in a while and well dammit man i miss you and the 71 sqdn killing me!

(...not to be insulting but i do not pray but my thoughts will be with both of you and you also 63tb till it's over... red keep in touch bud. <S> everyone)
