Just started playing this past weekend. Having lots of fun, just got a Panzer III fully upgraded, looking at heading up the Panther route. Although everyone else seems to go the heavy route, do the high level Panthers not do as well?

The end-game play in WoT focuses on the use of heavy tanks, with some exceptions.  The Clan War battles use 15 tanks to a side, and probably 11-12 of them will be heavies, supported by arty, which makes up the balance.  Usually there's only one medium or so.  What I'd recommend, having concentrated almost exclusively on tank destroyers at first, is start with the tanks that offer you the most flexibility as you train up.  The tree you're in right now is a good one for that.  Once you get up to the Pzr III/IV, you can move laterally into the E-100 tree, the arty tree, or continue along the medium tree, so you're in a good position for the future.

Most people want the biggest baddest heaviest hitting beast they can get....it's compensation. Personally I'd say go the route you have most fun with first then work on other lines if you need the tanks for clan wars, or get bored with that particular tank.

When it went live I started back down the same lines I did in beta because the end result was what I had fun in. I got the Jagdtiger and then Maus for Clan Wars, and recently got a T95. I have the most fun in the T95 and thus it's what I use the most. When I get tired of it I start working on my other lines, but in the end the T95 is what is fun so it's what I use.
Slowly working down the E-50, T30, Patton, E-100 and Obj 704 lines. Got: Panther (for E-50), T32 (for T30), T20 (for Patton), Tiger II (for E-100) and Su-100 (for Obj 704). :D

It is all a matter of personal taste.

Mediums get a good gun and great speed with a loss in armor, so if you like to be able to get from cover to cover and flank your enemies - this is a great route for you.

If you just want to slug it out and be a huge artillery magnet, then try the heavy route.

If you like to sit back and snipe, then try going TD or artillery. Artillery has a LONG load and aim time and can be a pain in the high tiers (1.5 rounds per minute) and it's mostly luck.

If you want to zoom around and just have fun you could try grabbing a T-50. You have a LOT of speed vs little armor and not too big of a gun. You won't do much damage, but your goal isn't to kill the enemy. It's to piss them off and zoom around, keeping them visible for your team and your arty.
Like, ya know, when that thing that makes you move, it has pistons and things, When your thingamajigy is providing power, you do not hear other peoples thingamajig when they are providing power.

Depends on play style. I see Panthers and Panther II's just tearing up some battles. One or 2-shot someone. Run and hide. Repeat. You do need the top gun for that of course.

I too am going the heavy route but I picked a path where I can go back and get the Panthers as well later on.

It's a game.

Do what you enjoy doin ;)

The draw for me is simple to play, tuff to master small unit tactics. Fun to see just how much you can do in tank of choice.
When I run my heavies I run them as assault tanks if I am in top team rank. If not I try to flank and chew on enemies while they are busy.

Mediums I always try and flank and wait till enemy is busy before engaging.
Same with TD's .. 'best used from ambush' .. words to live by.

Lights are just a blast. Race ya to the Flag! -evil grin-
As Nobaddy has taught me, usually a good idea to take a long route or wait a minute before charging with a light,
..gives enemy a chance to disperse and its easier to find a lane thru their advance.

Arty is like droppin bombs. When I dont feel like runnin around with my bellybutton on fire, I run an arty :)

-Frank aka GE (1Grayeagle in WoT, usually claiming the honor of first to die for my team :)

cool vids, lol it boggles my mind how come AH ground game is like 20 years behind, see that 40 ton tank hits a tree, tree falls over. see that small shrub  oh lookie we went right through it instead of being flipped over
If people like you would use your brain for a minute, you would understand why it is unrealistic to expect the terrain in AH, where maps are HUNDREDS OF MILES ACROSS, with HUNDREDS OF PLAYERS IN THE ARENA could be as intricately detailed as a WoT map that covers one square mile with at most 30 players in the map.

T-28 medium or T-28 TD? there both fun, had the T-28 medium for a while. got my KV then just kinda quit on it for a while. the T-28 TD is fun, but it seems like my driver wants to catch every 120mm shell that comes my way.

I hated the BT-7 but haven't had one since Beta. Next good tank after the BT-2 is the T-34 with the 57mm, used correctly its a killer.

Go a Heavy Tank route.    E-50 is a dead end......

E-50 is a very fun tank. The only reason to ignore the medium lines is if you are planning on participating in Clan Wars.

I think what he is talking about is the terrain features stopping tanks, features that shouldn't. A tree branch should not stop a 40 ton tank, or even a 10 ton scout. Neither should a bush or a rock flip a tank. Those things don't happen in WoT. In fact, the tank destroys trees and buildings, and rightfully so.

If you reread what you quoted, I think you'll agree that he's not asking for the maps to be as intricately detailed as those in WoT.

While tanks are in AH, I think GVs are a side note. The Planes are the main feature. Over time maybe more will be done concerning the ground.
