ATI Radeons?
« on: August 26, 2011, 06:02:40 PM »
Is anyone using the ATI Radeon HD4650? we just ordered one since my el-cheapo nvidia card is about to die... it was suggested by dell after looking at our computer... so it should be compatible on my end.

Was just curious if anyone had one and what their opinions were of it.

Just stick with Nvidia, my opinion.

ATI has, of late, been pretty dominant.  Budget cards in particular favor ATI.

For reference, I have an nVidia card and haven't owned an ATI since about 1995.

Is that a single slot card, or does it tie up two expansion bays?  I'm looking to get a good single slot card, because the one I have now covers my only available
PCI slot.

5770s use two slots.

The 4650 sucked for me when trying to play AH, but it was a mobility version.

Mobility versions are not the same. Only the number is the same, hardware is typically 2-3 times slower. Given that HD4650 is a low-budget card that should retail around 50 bucks, its not going to be a screamer for games. It's also an outdated card that probably cannot be bought anywhere except the likes of Dell who stockpiled them and now try to get rid of them.

flight17, your mobo is going to play an important part in the performance of that card. agp vs pci-e vs pci-e 2.0 x16, etc, etc, etc... just know you're not going to be able to run ah with full eye candy, probably have to dial down the textures to 256 and no detailed water, stuff like that.

XFX and powercolor both make single slot radeon 5770s

The most important thing to know about radeons is the second digit gives you the power of the card while the first digit is more like a chronological progression.

A radeon 4850 will outperform even 2x 4650s in a crossfire configuration even though it is years older.

A radeon 5770 is probably the best bang for the buck and the sweet spot in the performance/price/powersumption curve.

While the X8XX cards will outperform all of the X7XX cards................if you are considering power draw, then the X8XX cards and the X9XX cards need researching since they pull considerably more power.

Sir, i had a 4670 in my old machine, could run AH at steady 60 fps with maxed out graphics except the self-shadowing, what was disabled. If you dont wanna more that AH, its a good lil card.
