Jimson, I think it's a combination of several factors.

  • People in AH2 are used to flying what they want when they want against whatever everyone else is flying.
  • More people are playing "win teh warz no matter what" and don't care about fights
  • People generally want (or need) some sort of goal and reward, rather than "mindless fighting"
  • The non-automatic arena settings/resets make the arena unplayable until a staffer can come in and fix it

All of this makes a 24x7 historical arena tough to manage and tougher to keep populated.

:salute to all the AvA staffers who work hard for the AH2 community

Dont get me wrong by reading recent posts I think the AvA staff are trying hard to do some changes with what they have. But read past posts of people saying that the AvA was a historical dueling arena. So whats the point then, I can duel any plane type in the MA and dont have to look hard to find it. Bottom line is there has to be an end game not just the same old thing day after day.

Winning the war is not an end game anymore than fighting. You fly you fight you win or lose rinse and repeat. You fight the war you win or lose rinse and repeat.
It's always the same thing in either endeavor one is not superior to the other. It's an historical dueling arena only if you let it be so. The arena's personality is up to the people playing in it. It's really not decided by the AVA Staff or HTC. We try and supply challenging historic plane and vehicle matchups and we try to supply objectives for both sides to identify a winning side most weeks. That's the best we can do. People are free to pursue their fun how they may as they do in the Main Arena. If you need to reset a map to have fun that's the one thing we can't do.

First off :aok :salute to everyone involved in running this site--I think you're doing a great job-And thanks to all who provided input on this and all the help over the last year during our transition-We came over from FA when it ended and my thought was a room similar to the "Historical Arena" in FA where when all the opposition bases were captured the room cycled to the next arena in the queue. They were all modeled with the a/c sets, etc. I am not a programmer and don't have a clue what that would entail, but if you guys say it would not work here,( I for one believe you!!!)- then we just will deal with it,,,after all this is a game and the point is to have fun!

If at some time in the future if it becomes possible then awesome- :x-if not,  I'll still be in the skies providing target practice!!! :rofl

Again--thanks for the explanation folks, about what it takes, and keep up the great work!!!

I guarantee a rolling planeset would more than triple the population in Axis VS Allies.

Well.......the arena has been empty every single time I have checked in the last 4 days.

If the rolling planeset were implemented, I would be flyiing there instead of the late war main arena.

I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing for more realism and I'm just not interested in the the axis vs allies current status as a special events arena disguised as what it's name implies.

I've only been in the AvA since it's inception in Dec 2001... I've pretty much seen it all. While a rolling planeset has it's place for a limited time (like 4-6 weeks), not as a perpetually rolling-over system.

Salute m8's!  Had a blast in AvA this past weekend...20+ pilots.  I too appreciate the effort you guys put into this arena.  It is my favorite place to fly when populated and I can get my squaddies in there.

I think Long is asking for the ability to roll the arena automatically when it's captured, even if we can't do it now..

In FA Historical the arena would reset when it was captured or certain other victory conditions are met.  Some reset after a certain time period, usually 3 hours.  It would then roll to a completely different map/planeset with new victory conditions.

It was very cool, and averaged from 10-30 folks in there in the evenings, which is saying a lot because in FA the 'MA" equivalent might have 100-130 pilots in it.  There was a list of around 30 maps that the 'Historical development' team offered up.  We ended up with the 10 or so most popular in the rotation.

At any rate, FA Historical had a pretty solid following...more so than the AvA here in AH as far as I can see.

Salute, and keep up the good work!

I, Raven and others have personally asked for these tools a number of times and I'm sure HTC has seen the posts.

They must feel that it is not something they can devote their limited resources to right now.

However, it can't hurt for folks to continue to express a desire for this sort of development.

Who knows? maybe someday the wish will be granted.

I appreciate the effort.

Now the statement HTC dosent have the time or money to revamp the AvA room make more sense than "it can be done". When I first came to AH a year ago after FA shut down, AvA was one of the first rooms I tryed out and I was in for a big shock. All I got was PM's saying that BnZ was not fair, dont interupt a turn fight, dont bomb fields and "come down here and fight", and that 1v1 was the only fair way to fly in the room. Look at some of the older posts and see these statment are true.  This attitude in no way reflects on those who try and take of the room but it still is dueling arena with no goal and no point, but thats just MHO.
