The engineering has been done from the ground up. I wont reveal the manufacturer yet but will once I know its in production I will. They would not go here unless there was a market. Theres already a large .308 market but little options out there, This is being targeted at the same time as the 30-06. Trust me people are wanting more use out of their AR Style rifles besides target practice or filling a tree full of lead or shooting beer bottles, so hunting is a great avenue to explore for a rifle like this.

You don't have to sell me on it. I can't wait to see it :aok

Does that make me a "mall ninja"?? :D

Thats what you said. A 100 fps difference with a 180 grain .30 bullet is a difference thats almost nonexistant. Federal premium loads can deliver a 180 grain bullet that still retains almost 2,000 lbs of energy at 300 yards. Its hunters taking 437 yrd shots that causes Elk cripples, not .308 vs 3006 shooters. Once people start bragging about their long shots I quit a conversation, this one is getting silly anyway. Besides your feelings are getting hurt cause somone is disagreeing with you.

I shoot a .338 win mag and I dont take 427 yrd shots.

First of all nobody said 80 yards.

Secondly, There is a big difference in .308 and 30-06. The cartridge is smaller than a 30-06. This translates in velocity and kinetic energy stored differences. This Idea that someone always gets a perfect kill shot is ridiculous. Ive been hunting Elk for 32 years. Ive seen all kinds of situations where a .308 or .270 will not have the stopping power. Its the Kinetic energy that will drop a 600 lb. animal if the shot isn't in a PERFECT spot. I wouldn't go after an elk with a .308 Its irresponsible in my experience. In my point of view the first concern should always be the animal and how quickly you can take its life.

Heres some great documentation on the .30 cal debate.

My mistake, I though you said it was a larger caliber than the .308, you were comparing to the .270.   Regardless, I think .308 win is still plenty to take an elk.  (assuming of course you can place a shot in the critical areas, as you should be able to do before you hunt an animal in my opinion)

The ideal is placement and having the amount of time to do so. Reality is that it is not always the case. I practice difficult shots throughout the year, 1 - 2 second shots at 75 and 100 yards snap shots freehand are my most practiced. I will also run 50 yards then shot as to simulate a situation where an animal might disappear over a ridge in the trees, all kinds of situations where you have to create the shot or you'll never never get one.

Well there are the insults again, No hurt feelings just shows you cant debate without attacking the person not the argument.

A 400 yard shot is well within any of the 3 guns we've talked about. I'm glad you don't take those shots, doesn't sound like you practice enough otherwise you would realize and be confident that its a very do-able shot, if you know your ballistics and weapon....

NOW, since you went there with the insults than think about this. You said you have hunted in Canada, Alaska and Africa. I don't think you have property in any of those or know the land owners personally in those territories. Therefor that tells me your a shooter NOT a HUNTER a HUNTER doesn't pay others to take them to a place to shoot at an animal. A HUNTER figures out where that place is on his own.... Your a Checkbook shooter .....  Hunter want 2 be is all you do....

For everyone else staying on topic....The owner told me this afternoon that there is a very large market forming from theses AR style rifles. Its called  Sport Rifles = the use of an AR platform for game hunting. So, in my opinion its a great thing to see an industry adapt to what is being formed by the consumers....  :rock

AR's offer gucci accesories.  Thats ok in my book.  What I don't get is why every other manufacturer can have an "every caliber" option and the AR purist can't phathom the concept.  Why is it ok for Winchester and bad for AR style rifle enthusiast?  Does it down play your wanna be, bad azz, back woods home grown military mentality?  What difference does it make really.  You buy AR's because they look cool, if you have one at the range then people think your cool or and let me be loud on this one YOU WERE TRAINED TO TRUST THIS GUN AND YOU HAVE EMOTIONAL TIES TO IT.  Other then that there are plenty of semi auto rifles out there that can fire a .223 or a .308 round. As far as the 30-06 round vs the .308 isn't this for the ford and chevy forums?  I did alot of research and what I found is the 06 has the best all around kiss.
They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

Very True all around... I shoot my Grandfathers Model 721 Remington 30 -06. I put a Timmney Trigger 3 1/2 lbs. pull, Burris Full FieldII scope and shoot a 180 grn Nossler Partition or AccuBond. at 2700 FpS. I know and Love this weapon. Put a different rifle in my hands and there are many shots I would not take until i knew the weapon as well as I know my Remington.... BTW my daughter shoots its twin a .270 and both were made in 1957.  There is a lot of history where we hunt we are on the 4th generation now...

Lots of guys like the Ar platform because that is what they are used to. If you have been training most of your life with Ar then it makes sense to keep the same platform so that operation is the same just different round. Most guys aren't planing to hunt animals with the AR, most see it as a self defense weapon.  I have handled a .308 vs of the AR and like it better than a Fal.  Anyway not a big 30 ought guy myself but know there are lots of guys out there that would purchase and Ar platform in that cal.

Hey Kam what is the price range going to be?

I wouldn't mind a .338 lapua myself to shoot water jugs with.

That I'm not privy to at this point but as soon as its goes into production ill post it. The company is already selling .308 AR parts on Midway. along with their other calibers.

Boy, a 338 Lapua  talk about Reach out and touch someone.... :)

I hunt in a very diverse area. Heavily(dense trees), Open area(Long range possibilities), Elk at a dead run in the trees(snapshot), bedded down, hell I got one sleeping once. Some a .308 would have been fine. My last one I dont believe it would have been.

KAM

That sir isn't hunting and never should be mentioned. If someone publicly mentions that in my area then they are ridiculed and made fun of all the time. When a game animal is sleeping you aren't hunting it you are killing it for the heck of it; irregardless of whatever you are doing with the meat from the kill.

As for the .30-06; it is my favorite bolt action rifle of all time but I do hunt with a .280, a .308, a .30-30 and various others depending on what I am hunting. I have owned and still do now a couple of Remington Model 700's that have been produced at different times throughout their history and am comfortable taking them just about anywhere and making shots out to 450-500 meters with them; more than that and I can't guarantee a kill shot consistently. Kinetic energy doesn't mean a cotton picking thing when you can place your shots anywhere you wish on running game animals of various sizes.

For instance go rabbit hunting with an GAMO air rifle or .22 rifle...then come back and talk about how good a snap shooter you are when you kill 6 rabbits with 6 shots and all were in less than 25 yards and with shot times of sub 2 seconds for sight acquisition and trigger pull. I have never shot Elk before but I have made plenty of large white tail kills in thick hard woods, open fields, scrub brush, pine thickets, swamps, etc... and at ranges from 10 feet to 350+meters with the animals doing anything from standing dead still to running full speed. The only thing that mattered was placement.
