Debating on disabling cpu graphics on i7-2600k
« on: August 31, 2011, 02:42:08 AM »
would it be beneficial to go ahead and disable the built in graphics on my i7-2600K, since I have a dedicated 6950 2gig video card?

would this let my cpu run even cooler and possibly give me a bit more performance???

appreciate all opinions / comments!

also, on a side note......
Newegg is going to be having a heck of a deal on the Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 128 Gig SATA III  6.0 Gbps SSD

New Egg Shell Shocker Link:  goes on sale at 10 AM PDT  Today :
http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=ShellShocker-_-20-148-442-_-08312011_2

I have 2 of these, and with the recent 009 firmware update  I am getting seq Read over 500 MB/s ( 510 actual )  and Seq Write is up to 370+ MB/s  on one of my SSD's in my Intel PC ACHI SATA III ports,  and the other SSD is in my AMD PC  on a Marvel SATA III port........ the AMD PC has a better Write speed but a slightly lower Read Speed

wonder what I could get if I put both in the same PC and RAID 0 them ????

if you can swing it, I strongly recommend this SSD,  I paid regular $218.99 & $ 224.00 for mine..... and these Shell Shocker Deals are usually 30 to 60 % off.......

in case anyone is interested in a SSD

I don't think it would run cooler, per se. I don't think that's much of an issue, as it doesn't seem these are overly hot chips.

The problem is that chip has those cores locked into a GPU. If you want to get more out of it you could trade it in for the non-GPU version that has extra cores.

I think disabling it is good, from a BIOS level if that's supported. There's a number of issues with integrated graphics on mobos and standalone cards. Now since this is new, who knows what conflicts may arise, but it can't hurt to disable it if not using it, right?

It sounds like you've got one of the z series mother boards. In the reviews I've read, performance is increased with the cpu graphics enabled on the z boards versus a p series mother board. You'll have to try it in AH and compare. I haven't seen any mention of heat build up, but I agree it shouldn't be much.
Easy in-game again.

TC, I have mine set up in the Virtu control panel. In the games tab there I've added AH and AHFilm and unchecked the box for them. This disables the graphics processor on the CPU and leaves that work to be done by the PCIe card instead. Made sense to me to do it that way rather than leave it to it's automatic self. It also made sense that the CPU's graphics processor would be plenty for surfin the net or other silly things rather than put that load on the 6950.

FWIW I haven't noticed any additional heat or performance on my CPU at least when playing AH. Cripes it handles AH with only about 10% load often times going into single digits and throttling down with Speedstep to 1.6Ghz. Not giving off much heat there. AH it seems is almost totally reliant on the video card but with the monsters we have I only notice about 25% load in the worst of furballs and I have everything max'd other than one notch less AA.
