getting into game
« on: September 01, 2011, 06:10:26 PM »
I can't figure how to get into the game. Once I'm in the tower, "Late War Arena" I'm told can't use that field. How do you choose/select a Field? What side is Bishop, Rook or Knight? Flying a German plane (Bf110-G2), what fields are for Axis and which for Allies? Do I need to join a squadron/group first? I'm so confused!!

Yea, I'm a lost here. Hell, I don't know if I'm in the right place to post this.

The countries in the main arena (late, mid, and early war) aren't divided into axis or allies the entire plane set is more or less available to each country.  Once your in the tower you need to open the clipboard (ESC) and go to the hangar to select plane and load out (guns, fuel, ordnance).  You'll see a cluster of buttons in the lower left corner of the clipboard with an "H" in the middle this is the spawn direction on the runway.  "H" means hangar and the other buttons correspond to a compass heading.  If you couldn't spawn a plane there were likely one of three things happening.

A) you were at the vehicle base or port - you can tell by looking at the clipboard map airfield are A##, Vehicle bases or "V-bases" start with V, and Ports a "P".  Airfields can spawn planes, vehicles, and sometimes PT-boats.  V-bases can only spawn vehicles and sometimes boats, Ports are the spawn locations of the various CV (Carrier) groups that roam the map and you can spawn Vehicles and PT boats.

B) the hangars had been recently destroyed.  The opposing side can close down a field by bombing and destroying the Fighter, Bomber, of Vehicle hangars which make it impossible to use that type of craft till they respawn (about 15 minutes IIRC).

C) you were trying to fly a "perk" plane - a small number of aircraft and vehicles have a point cost associated with them.  They are usually late war machines of high performance and the cost is meant to keep them from being over used.  You earn these perk points by achieving certain things in game.

I highly recommend you visit the Trainers website

This should answer a lot of the basic questions for you.

Johan, do you have a microphone?  If so, that will make it alot easier for you.  You can visit the Training Arena to speak (or if no mic, type) with a trainer, who can help you get started on the right track.  As Soulyss mentioned, the training website is a great place to get info about the game as well.  If you find yourself having a tough time getting rolling, I'd be glad to set up a time to meet you in the Training Arena to help out.

Whoops forgot to mention that you can move from field to field by bringing up the clipboard map and double clicking on the field you want to move to.

Johan,

To add to the good replies that you've already gotten...

If it shows in red, it's not available for whatever reason. You can right-click on the plane list in the hangar and have it only show enabled items, so if it's not available at that base, it won't show in the list.

If it's a "perked" item, it will warn if you haven't earned enough perk points to take it out of the hangar.

My advice is that you schedule a session with an Aces High Trainer as soon as you can.  He can answer all kinds of questions for you and get you headed down the right path as far as air combat manuevering is concerned.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the helpful replies. Being 56 years old has slowed my reflexes (and eyes). I have no idea if I'd ever be worth a cowpie but, will give it my best. I started in a Bf110G-2 but have since changed aircraft. Although the A-20 is similar to the G-2, there are no cannons (I miss those) and the rear gunner has limited visibility. I do like the payload and want to get more into bombing than dogfights. I have the worst score of anyone for anything anywhere. Yea, I suck but want to improve the skills needed to survive.

If anyone can train in bombing techniques (A-20 has no bombsight), I'm very interested. A little knowledge in dogfighting couldn't hurt either. I'm available 2:00PM-midnight 7 days a week E.S.T. Just send me a PM. My son is donating one of his head sets in a couple days. One of the perks for being retired.

Thank again.

Everyone's gotta start somewhere, I remember it took me several tries just to get the bird in the air when I first started.  Just take it one step at a time and realize there's A LOT to learn, I've been here years and I still learn new things, one of the reasons I keep coming back.

Welcome to Aces High!

I'm 53 and I do pretty well fighting these "kids"  :D  While our eyesite isn't so good and our reflexes may not be as quick, us old dogs have the patience  to learn a trick or two. The whole trick with flying fighters is knowing the "moves" and getting them down. Then when you see what "they" are doing you know where to fly to and just wait for them to fly in front of your guns  :devil It's kinda like playing chess. Skill is more important than speed or eye site.

Give it time and practice. If you have the desire, you can build the skill. Good luck, and see you in the skies !  <S>

Johan,

Starting with the Bf110G-2 or A-20G will make the steep learning curve of AH steeper.  I'd advise also picking another aircraft to use for times you may get frustrated with your virtual lifespan.  If you like German aircraft, the Bf109F-4 would be a decent choice as a dogfighter.  Other good suggestions for starting aircraft would be the Spitfire Mk VIII or Mk IX (or Mk XVI) or N1K2-J.

If you like the heavy attack aircraft, try the P-38L, P-38J, P-47D-40, P-47N and Mosquito Mk VI as well.

P-38 is a nice dive bomber.  I would recommend taking the 500 pound bombs (instead of the 1000s) unless you are going for hangars or Tiger tanks.  An overlooked dive bomber that is also an awesome fighter is the Ki-84.  I learned to bomb in this ride and the great handling of this machine makes it a good plane to learn on.  Even with one bomb still on, it can fight.  It is good at everything.

stick to the spit 9 (IX) until for a while, it's one of the easiest to learn, good speed, good ammo.  the other are the zero's but they're kind of slow.  spit 8 (vIII) is great too. once you put in a couple of months, then move to others if you wish.  I wouldn't go the p38, 109 or niki just yet as even long time players suck in them, but they all tell you how great they are  :bhead. dont do the 190's, ponies, or p47's as all you will learn is dive, run, come back 10 minutes later, repeat.

for bombers try the b26;s or the b17, not the lancs are they are too heavy and dont have enought ammo/gunners to defend yourself.  try no to up a bomber with more than 50% fuel. as 50% is more than enough for most missions.  try to bomb from around 10k and make sure you are already going full speed before you enter the enemy dar.

you dont want me to ho, dont point your plane at me.
