They're easily caught with a live trap and cat food.

Once you have it trapped, what do you plan to do with it?  It's almost definitely illegal to transport it and release it, so your option is to kill it or let it go where you caught it which is obviously pointless.

A .22 will kill it easily, but you should avoid shooting it in the head, for several reasons.  First, that usually makes them tense up, and release their musk.  Second, skunks are one of the most likely carriers of rabies, which is a disease of the central nervous system.  Considering the brain is part of that system, and that blowing a hole in it's head will almost definitely result in the distribution of some brain matter, it's not a recommended option.

If you do shoot it, shooting it in the lungs is a better option, because it normally results in the animal relaxing and not releasing its musk.  Avoid hitting it in any large bones though.

There are other, quieter, cleaner, methods to dispatch a trapped skunk.

First, simply walk up to it calmly and slowly with an old blanket held up as in front of you (arms spread).  Use the blanket as a shield/blind (so the critter doesn't see you), walk up to it, and lay it over the trap.  It sounds nuts, but skunks don't just spray at any old thing, and they don't know what a blanket is, let alone feel threatened by it.

At this point, you can actually pick the trap up and carry it if you so desire, and the skunk won't spray.

An easy dispatch option is to run a hose from your car exhaust under the blanket, and run your engine for a little while.  Another is to drop the trap into a garbage can full of water (just do it calmly/smoothly; skunks aren't threatened by water, so no spraying).  Another is to use a syringe taped on a broomstick loaded with acetate, and inject it into it's lungs.

Try moth balls around the perimeter of your yard. I'm not sure how well it will work out in the open, but it keeps them out of crawl spaces.

Parked my car a few nights ago, started walking to my back door and out of the bushes jumps a skunk. We both freeze and stand there eyeballing each other. He was a tuff looking little bugger, showed no fear. So very softly I said. "Yes you are a brave, good looking skunk (he was) now get back into the bush." After a few more seconds he turned around and walked away. I breathed a sigh of relief and walked around to the front door.

Check out a product called I got to garden, they make a whole line of animal repllent. The one for deer and snakes works really well. With the lack of rain here the deer are eating anything green and my wife raises doves so chicken snake were a big problem. Put the stuff out no more critters. And I love the smell of skunk wife says I weird.

I got home from work late on evening and found a critter in the trash.  Looked like a cat, big and white. Grabbed a rock and chucked it in its general direction.  Critter bounded off trash can.  I gave chase with a handful of rocks, figured if I hit him good once he wouldn't be back.  As I got about 5 feet away I noticed this big white cat was waddling and not really running. I mean should I be able to run down a cat in full sprint?  Turns out it was a rather large albino stripped skunk.  We have both stripped and spotted here, but the spots run alot smaller and not as common.  Wouldn't have been very funny if he had decided to stand his ground......

Unless you meet up with a totally freaked out animal intent on attacking you, attitude counts around critters.

Stand tall and let them know that you do not fear them. Tell them they are handsome and majestic, they like that.

Go on your way.
