P-38s make short work of Ki-61s.  :devil

I agree with Widewing on Mitsu, one of the better sticks to fly the Ki-61, along with the already mentioned Karaya.  Odege also used to be one of the top Ki-61 pilots before he retired but fortunately, I do have his library of old films somewhere.

also, with sticks coming from flying planes that don't turn as well, the ki-61 turns quite well as such you do not need to pull as hard as you can. Instead preserve 'e' by only pulling as hard as needed to achieve the desired result.

Mitsu was outstanding in the Ki-61... Always formidable and very highly respected. He's also a great guy.

Yes I was..... so I fly only in the Ki-61 from now!  :aok

I do remember Kermit being an excellent Ki-61 stick keeping it in the horizontal fight - if you'd go vertical he would be waiting for you with his nose.

I flew it quite a few times in FSO/Snapshot - much respect for the Ki-61 however I don't consider myself any good in it.

Are there any Ki61 über elites drivers out there?  :D Im really into the Ki61, and not to brag but I consider myself at least above average than most who flies the Ki61. But of course, I'm always looking to improve.

I set the cannons out to D600 and MGs at D400. I almost always take 50% fuel unless for long distances which I take 75%. I love the way the plane handles and it's gun packages. Ballistics seem decent, they're no Hispanoes, but I like them. Roll rate is great, and I'll BnZ targets I can't turn with and TnB with those I can like 190s, 109s and the likes.

Only real trouble for me is against planes like Mustangs and La7s where I can't climb or fly as fast as they can, and they'll hold all the advantage as soon as I drop below their altitude or with less E.
The Tony doesn't exactly accelerate like those two and it's top speed is mediocre, how can I out fly these guys?

Don't use the Ki-61, it's probably the worst thing to get into a turn fight with. If you're looking for a turn fighter, get into a Brewster, and if you're not into that try an F4U or and I-16.

The Ki can hold its own in a turn fight........its not a Zeke, or Brew but it dont underestimate its ability to turn fight. (just my opinion)

The Ki-61 is fine turning, as long as you manage your E well. Like the P-40s and P-39D, if you get too slow, you get dead pretty quick. Poor acceleration and miserable flaps combine to make the Ki-61 suffer in stall fights.

I fly a KI61 because I DON'T want to fly those planes. I prefer a plane with a challenge but can still kill (I'm not going to fly a D3A1, nor a Spitfire 16 or a P51D). However, I will fly planes with perk prices (Spit14/F4U4) because they have an amount of risk to them, which makes up for the challenging factor.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

The d3a and P51 are far from uber easy rides.

Of course the D3A1 isn't an easy ride, it's just luck whether or not you get a kill. I want to earn my kill, not pray for it.  :aok

The P51 IS IMO, speed = life and the Pony got lots of it to outrun/chase every plane out there. Yet I don't want to run, I want to fight. Pony gives bad habits because use its speed for every problem.

Well IMO, the Jug is probably the most simple aircraft. It's easy to use, if you know what you're doing, the E doesn't last long, but if you have good E you can always make a swift zoom climb. It's best to BNZ with it, however, most people use it like it's a Stuka, which was correct for it's roll but I argue that I would love to see a Jug comparable to the ratio of the M. The M performs quite well due to people not stocking it with bombs, also with a light gun package it can be borderline lethal (if you do not know how to use it). Same with the D11, however nobody really uses it, they either use a D-40, N, or an M. The D11 and D25 are my most favorite models. However, if there was no Jug to the game, I would probably end up flying P-40s, which are comparable. Not so much comparable in ord, but six .50s do good enough. Takes the same style as the Jug.

While it might be a difficult and challenging ride for you, in general the Mustang is not a difficult plane to fly or fight in.
