Panther Question
« on: September 10, 2011, 06:08:29 PM »
I know that the Panther has sloped frontal armor. I was just wondering if there is any specific angle to keep the armor at? I'm wanting to learn how to use it in-game, any answers would be greatly appreciated.

always try to keep your panther's front to an enemy, and both of the sides ( if possible) up against a barn/hill so some of the sneaky tanks dont kill ya from the sides. if your really worried about other tanks killing you, then put your frontal armor in front of every tank you see.

other than that, point, shoot, kill and land.  happy hunting!  :salute

The Panther is very vulnerable from the side or rear.  As far as I know, pretty much all of its better armor is in the front.

I think he means is there a specific angle that works the best.  The answer is that you want to present a target to your enemy with the highest degree of armor deflection.

The Panther is no better of than the other medium tanks when it comes to side, rear, and top armor.  The front hull and front turret armor is quite impressive.  With that being said, if you are in a Panther and have the time to angle yourself slightly to the side so you are not perfectly facing 90 towards the enemy, then do it.  Do not go too far, because once you start firing you are going to draw attention to yourself and that is not what you want.

Ideally, the enemy round would impact at as close to a parallel angle as possible for the deflection, but remember usually when that is the case you expose another armor face for a more direct impact.  Regardless of the tank, go for the "front towards the enemy", with a slight angle (20-30) to either side.

My 2 cents.

The best position will be "hull down," meaning that only your turret is poking up over whatever you're hiding behind. (If you saw my post in the "who's the best tanker" thread, that whole engagement was won because of using a hill as a hull-down emplacement.) A good example of this is the hull-down positions scattered around vehicle bases, however these put you at a severe disadvantage by limiting you to reversing in or out of them.
Sometimes this can be achieved by ramping part way up a hill or by creeping up to the edge of a steep drop-off, however you need to be careful of moving too far forward as that will expose the bottom of your tank to fire. The tank dies when the driver is killed, and as there's very little armor underneath a tank, it's very easy to put one right between his legs.
In the case of hiding behind a hill, if you're crafty enough, you can actually put yourself "broadside" to the enemy and point your frontal armor toward the direction they'll come around the hill, giving yourself ground cover on one side and armor on the other...optimally set up so that you can fire over the hill at him the whole time. This is much more difficult with the new hills, though.

In general, common sense applies. If you were going to take your fist and punch the armor from the angle that a round would hit, and your fist would end up stopping (and breaking a few knuckles), then you have a very high chance of a round penetrating. But if it were a position where your fist would skid or skip off the surface of the armor, the shell is likely to do the same thing.

You want to face your enemy from the front in a hull down position if you can, the lower front hull is weak and easily penetrated under 1400 yards by a T34/M476. Never ever face your enemy straight up in a shoot out, turn 10 degrees left/right to where he is facing, it helps increase glancing blows rather then kill shots on the lower front hull.

Range is the best option and High grounds, the Panther is able to kill a Panzer at 4,000 yards, and the T34/M4 beyond 2,000 yards easily.
If you can sit yourself on a hill, with a hull down position - only the Tiger/King Tiger can do any damage to ya.

Again even with the armor being as great as it is - you have to remain at a distance, under 800 yards even a Panzer can kill you, 1500 is the minimum range you want to be in a hull down situation where the turret would not be penetrated by anything other then a Panther/Tiger.

Use its speed, the Panther is great for darting from location to location - it does 29 mph and you can easily get into trouble as fast as you can exist.
Find the next hill, and dart towards it - when you get into position shut down and listen for enemy tanks.
