Bravo ones, and the first year of 1988.  TRS and Volvo's are good drives, but they will cost you!  Alphas and Bravos are like small block chevys around here.
you mean they burn lots of oil, and smoke a lot?  :devil

40 weight oil is what mercury recommends  yeah, a big block uses a lot of oil at 4,500 rpm for 15 minutes, it holds 7 quarts!

You can't use regular 40w oil, it needs the good stuff added or you will grind a cam lobe.

I was service manager (mercruiser certified tech.) for "full tilt marine" and I don't remember any big blocks using excessive amounts of oil.

the whole 'big block' vs small block thing boils down to:

Same mods done to both, the big block will stomp the snot out of a small block.
( I speak of chebbies ..as they set the paradigm ..a Rat with big port heads is just plain scary how fast it can turn air into horsepower)

IMHO a small block is only good for places a big block just wont fit.

Period.

I can go out for a weekend and burn 100 gallons, and then top of both motors with about 1/2 quart of oil.  One engine is 24 years old with about 400 hours.

Have you run it further to see if it burns any additional oil after that 1/2 quart?  If it's just blowing that oil out from the get go and running 1/2 quart low at it's optimum level all the time you're just throwing more oil on top that's going to get blown right back out.

Come to think about it I have never seen  a ford motor in a boat . My jet boat had a 455 in it .

Oil usage doesn't seem consistent.  I check the oil before I take it out, so I don't remember every detail from the previous trip.  I'm sure I have some blow bye. I usually cruise around 3-3.5k in rpms, sometimes I take it on up to 5k.

Are you checking it cold and filling it hot?

Next few trips keep a log of usage and get some hard data. That or just put a little oil in and keep on with a happy life :)

No, checking it cold.  You ever tried leaning over and hugging a 454 hot! ;)  It has a lot of extra hoses and mounts for the oil cooling system and filter, but none of that is leaking.  I've noticed the starboard side engines dip stick backed out a little.

Well, let's see, page 45 of the thread. This should be deep enough for me to post:

I do need the space. Took awhile for me to get it on the road but that's another story. Also has sentimental value.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

I LOVE the Voyager.

One time I was cruising 65 across a frozen reservoir in one when my buddy said to me, "Hey man, you might wanna slow down. You never know what yer gonna run into out here."

No sooner he said that we went airborne off a pressure crack.

Landed that sucker. Whiskey across the windshield and women across each other. It was awesome. Never let off the gas and never felt any ill effects.

Those Plymouths are BEAST.
