Didn't get a chance to see it but it sounds totally fair.  Touch gloves and fight, pretty standard.  If the idiot loser didn't think the big dude wearing gloves in the ring with him was gonna punch him, he needs a more thorough head exam before he continues that line of work.

Ref shouldn't have turned his back, but "fights on" means exactly that, whether the ref is watching or not.

Then again, maybe Ortiz was waiting for someone, his Mom maybe, to tell him it's ok to fight now...  I figure the large guy coming at me with his fists raised would be enough of a hint, but that's just me.   :O

If you haven't seen it:

Technically, I guess it was legal, but very very poor sportsmanship.  Sure shows Mayweather's character though.

Oh, and poor refereeing as well.

Wow, legal yes, bad sportsmanship - definitely. Ortiz's head wasn't back in the fight right there.

Glad I didn't pay to watch that lol......

I think it was a miss-communication between the ref and Ortiz, Ortiz didn't realize the fight was back on.  You can't really blame him when the ref is looking off to the side.

After watching the vid, it looks like a cheap shot but still legal.  Touching gloves then stepping back happens before round 1...  Anytime you're out of the corner after that you need to be protecting yourself, period.

Of course, I once struck out a kid who was taking his sweet time taking practice swings, wiggling his arms and bat, basically just wasting time.  As soon as the umpire crouched down behind the catcher, I threw my best fastball and caught the idiot still wiggling like a worm.  He couldn't believe it, strike three before he even knew the pitch was coming.  I just got tired of watching him fool around and threw as soon as the ump was in position to call the strike while the batter's feet were both in the box :)

When the ref goes over the rules with each boxer he tells them both to protect yourself at all times, that said it's typical of Mayweather,he's always hit after the clinch and any good trainer would tell his fighter to watch out for "cute" stuff from him.

Ortiz left himself wide open for the hook, once Mayweather landed it the right followed and put Ortiz down,Cortes was being occupied by the corner after he gave the command to box, wasnt his fault.

I've come to expect nothing less from Mayweather, shame too because he's highly skilled and very slick.Personally I dont think we'll see Mayweather and Manny fight,it would be a good fight but Mayweather wont get in with Manny!

What made the fight even crazier was when Mayweather started trash talking the super old announcer who was asking him about the ethics of what he did. Best quote too was "If I was 50 years younger, I'd kick your a**!"

Those 2 things alone made it worth watching IMHO, cause I doubt you'll see that again.  :lol

My thought as well. Makes for a disappointing finish, but the blame goes to ortiz.

The announcer was being a love muffin though.  He asked him about the "cheap shot" once and Mayweather was cordial and explained what he did was legal, then he asked him about it again and Mayweather lost it.

Mayweather was dominating the fight anyways.

The one thing that would have made it better is if Mayweather had given back the head-butting point by, after touching gloves, kicking Ortiz right in the junk while the ref wasn't looking.  The ref would have taken his point but couldn't do anything worse than that because he didn't see it, and then they'd be even and Mayweather could have continued to dominate the fight while Ortiz wondered if he was ever going to have kids.

I'm sure people would have enjoyed that more.
