Laptops that play Aces High
« on: September 18, 2011, 10:58:37 AM »
Please post your laptop that plays Aces High with frame rates, playability and what you paid for it.  Some of us have great desktops but might be out on the road and need a dogfight fix or just can't miss FSO!  I bought a $375 toshiba satellite that loads Aces High but is not playable with frame rates around 8?

Ideas?

Laptop are NOT made for gaming, unless you buy a gaming laptop. Then with all the heat a decent video card puts out you'll over heat the laptop in no time. Cheap laptop are even worst as they use a generic Intel video card that isn't built for 3d video. I use to use a laptop when I was on the road for work. I had to have all graphics set as low I they could be, and even then I would Bnz more than not because if I was turning to close to another plane it would lag.

^ What he said. I have a pretty decent Dell laptop, above average for laptops, and the only way I can play AH on it is to turn the graphics down as far as they'll go. Even then I only get about 20-30 framerate at the most. If i'm around allot of people it drops to about 10. Laptops are just not the way to go for playing AH.

here, decent article that should give you an idea of what you can expect to pay for a "gaming laptop"...

just keep in mind, ah with full eye-candy won't be possible but depending on the unit you buy, bump map terrain, detailed terrain, 256 textures at 50+ fps could happen.

I have just put AH onto my Dell Studio 1749 laptop while I rebuild my desktop.

Graphics are turned way down from my dual core pc, but I was actually quite surprised by how well it played AH and even WoW.

I'm running this now. I turned off shadows, that's about it. 60fps almost all the time.

The biggest thing is to get one that DOES NOT have integrated Intel graphics.

i have a dell inspiron laptop that can run AH full eye candy but not for long. it manages around 5 FPS with full eye candy with my shadow settings at 4096 or something like it. without eye candy it jumps up to 65 and im not sure if it was even meant for gaming.

i got this thing for about $600 in 2009. which isnt a bad deal if you ask me.

Have me an Asus G73, amazing machine. Hardly ever disco, fps are always smooth as glass, and you can crank the grapics to 11 and the computer will just let out a "meh" :aok Contrasting to my old computer that could barely handle Starcraft.... :headscratch:

My Sony Vaio has an i7 processor, NVIDIA GT 540M chip set with 1 GB dedicated video memory and a 16" screen.

Screen is smallish, and I'm close to the heat when playing, but it will maintain 60 fpm all day with video settings at max detail except for self-shadow.

Got it June'11, spent north of $1k.

I'm running it just fine on the mac laptops.  Only thing I've ever used for AH since I play most of the time while I'm at work.  Currently using a Macbook Pro 2011 model with Windows 7 64 bit on a separate partition on the hard drive.  Gets 60 FPS without working the vid card hard at all.  Detailed graphics, shadows, hi-res, etc etc.  I do take a small hit when I'm running Fraps but it's really not noticeable.  I'm sure i could tweak it a bit because the vid card has a lot more capacity but I just haven't messed with it due to a) lack of motivation and - more importantly - b) lack of knowledge :)

here's what anandtech wont tell you with his pretty benchmark charts: video<

been playing on an ASUS K53TA for $450 from bestbuy. added 4GB ddr3, 64GB ssd, bump up cpu to 2.4GHz = awesome.
fluid gameplay, no stutter, hi-res texture pack at 1024 and 120deg field of view. been joining bish-horde missions and it's steady at 35fps min.

performance guides at: ntbkreview<
bottom line is, avoid anything w/ intel sandy bridge HD(bad image quality): http://techreport.com/articles.x/21099/11; and issues w/ 23.976fps video playback.
