noise canceling headphones
« on: September 19, 2011, 01:02:16 PM »
Does any body recommend some inexpensive noise canceling headphones for occasional use for 50.00 a pair or so.  I need 2 headphones.  also, can I use a y adapter and have enough volume to watch a movie with an ipad on a plane?

I bought a par of Sonys for around $49 I think, from a Best Buy vending kiosk in an airport.  Total impulse purchase but they work fairly well.   Does cancel out quite a bit of the cabin noise.

noise canceling? Like they cancel out outside noise while playing music? or just cancel out the noise around?

I Brought a pair home and tried them out.

My wife immediately vanished.

I had to take them back.  I needed her income.

I wont use the headphones for aces high.  Wife just thought we should have a set apiece for travelling once in a while.

True noise cancelling headphones use a microphone to sample the noise and then piggyback a signal opposite of the phase of said noise onto your program material.

They are awesome for trips on the plane even if you aren't listening to something.

I once plugged in them into my stereo but left the main speaker on and things got really strange.

 that's too funny

rondar, have you considered using earbuds? being much smaller than full size headphones they are easier to transport, block out a lot of noise and can be very comfortable. less expensive than good full size headphones too.

If $100 is not out of the question, there are in-ear-monitor headphones that work very well.  Well enough to cut out the sound of a Marshall stack when on the stage, yet still hear clearly in the earbuds.
