IHS
« on: September 21, 2011, 01:54:13 PM »
Has anyone bought anything from IHS before?
http://global.ihs.com/

There is a document I want to download from that site. The problem is that they do not use paypal and I don't really want to give them my credit card number as to me it's an unfamiliar company. If anyone has done any business with them before please let me know how it went.

Thanks

if your in doubt there is a simple way to get around giving them your credit card number. go to walmart, target ect and get a prepaid credit card. you put on it what you want to put on it to cover what your buying and then you use that credit card number instead.

it runs like any normal credit card except even if the number gets jacked and someone tries to use it is is not connected to your bank account or you personally. so no chance identity theft.

it is only good for the amount you have previousely put on it so it cannot be overdrawn.

That's actually a good idea, I don't know why I didn't think of it, thanks.

If you use a credit card, there is a limit to your liability if someone steals your number and uses your card.  I believe it is $50.  If you use a debit card, you are liability is only limited to the balance of your bank account.  Credit cards are safer then debit cards.

Just for your information.

The pre-paid card is a safe alternative, but it will obviously increase the cost of whatever you are buying by the fees associated with the card.

I don't have any credit cards with a small amount on them, the same goes to debit cards. So I guess I'll go with the pre-payed unless I will get someone to confirm that it's a safe place.

Never used them but have heard of it since I was part of a group putting together an ASME standard ASME B30.27 for concrete pumps. They are basically a document clearing house for most major standards organizations. However you should be able to go directly to the organization that put out the document and buy it directly from them. If I am not mistaken IHS puts a small % markup on the transaction to cover the "paperwork" that they do to provide you with the document.

The same standard that I mentioned above you can get for $45 dollars directly from ASME and IHS puts $3 on it for the actual book form but doesn't charge extra for the digital version.

Good to know, thanks.

The "company" that put out the document is USAF and since I'm still a civilian it's a little difficult for me to get it from them.
