I grew up a country boy, so snakes were normally something fun to catch, much like frogs and lizards.  So I never grew up with any sort of fear of snakes.  As others have said, remove the reason for them being there and your snake problem will clear up.  At my current house I had a large population of garter snakes.  I had two things drawing them in, one was an abundance of large slugs, eww.  The other was I had a couple of large female garter snakes that tended to attract the small male ones like crazy.  I removed a couple of old wood structures from the property, and removed quite a few large female garter snakes (relocated to a nearby woods, about a mile away).  Snake problem is greatly reduced, not really a problem for me.  More of a problem for the snakes, since my German Shepard doesn't seem to play nice with them :frown:.  I occasionally get one now and then, I removed about 6 this summer.  A couple years ago, I'm sure the number was closer to 20 :O.  My wife isn't afraid of them even though she was a city girl, albeit she is not a fan of them.

There's a lot on the market but nothing works. Snake oil...

As somebody suggested, get to know the snakes and reason why are they coming to your property, which in most cases is food and/or shelter. Remove those and snakes will be gone too.

If all else fails, purchase half a dozen of kingsnakes (pet stores). They'll get rid of rattlesnakes for sure.

Sounds like me growing up.  All the people in the neighborhood called my mom and dad when they had a snake in the yard so they could have me go and remove it.  My mom never let me remove snakes from our yard when she saw them first.  I would fine finely diced snake bits.  She once chopped a 10 inch Garter snake into about 25 pieces when he crawled out from under a rock in her flower garden.  Luckily we never had much of an issue with poisonous snakes near my house.  We have rattlers, copperheads, and the rare cottonmouth in WV.  I have never seen a rattler in the wild here, only one cottonmouth, and a fair number of copperheads.  I most often had to remove our common buddies, garters and blacks.
