3D display
« on: October 04, 2011, 12:45:54 PM »
Hi all.  Was just curious, does AH support 3D displays?  Sony's coming out with a pretty decent looking HMD coming out this year.

I'm hoping this device flops horribly on the market, and I am able to pick one up on clearance for cheap.

I'm just wondering if it would be awesome (2D) or really awesome (3D).

Some people have posted issues with the gunsight and text buffer in 3D but other than that they said it as pretty cool. Wearable viewscreens with head tracking would be nice if I could still find the right keyboard keys in a hurry.

I figure that + the trackIR I already have should make for a pretty decent setup.

Iused 3d back when it was included with all nvidia vcs without their glasses.  its hard to judge distances and you can't really use the gunsight.  And it's really hard on the eyes.

Yes it works.

I've been using an Emagin Z800 for the last 5 years with AH... stereoscopic 3D and head tracking. It died a month or two ago and I've been looking at alternatives, the Vuzix VR-1200 will probably be what I get (US$599 with 6DoF tracking).

Only issue I had were the gunsight was off, but this was due to a dominant left eye... so it reflected a real world issue I do have.

3D adds a lot to AH, its much easier to understand energy states, you get a better feel in knife fights as to whats going on.

I've had significant trouble getting used to 2D flying with no head tracking without my headset (which is why I mostly tank these days, until I get my VR-1200).

So what you mean by the gunsight being off is, it is off center out of your left eye, but it still displays, right?  I'm right eye dominant so I'm not worried about it.  If I understand it right then, it effectively shows your right eye as the 'normal' view you get in the game, with your left eye offset to the side?  Did you ever try moving the head ingame and saving its position so your left eye had the correct view?

I don't think a person can go back to no head tracking once you're used to it.  I can't play without it anymore.

Thanks for the answers guys.  I hadn't found anything on it in a cursory search.  Glad to know it works.  One other aside- does the 3d help with the canopy bars in planes like the 109?

The gunsight displays fine in both eyes, but my brain processes my vision left eye dominant. So there is usually a small 'zone' in the center of my vision where the left image has dominance, so it effectively means I'm looking at the gunsight offset behind from the left a little. As such my shots would go to the right of the target. End result was I usually found snapshots quite effective but let up someones dead 6 and I'd take all day to shoot them :D
