:frown: Hmmm, i dont know if I want to change anything that came stock on my comp in the past that is when my troubles start. Right now everything, except AH, runs perfectly i dont want to risk messing something up, especially when I dont know what I'm messing with. I do a lot of computer gaming and I have never had a problem running anything graphically intense before. AH does not seem to have better graphics than any of my other games, actually a little lower if anything. Is AH that different from other games?

*edit* nevermind, that's a stand alone installer that doesn't appear to try and over write directx 11. had to double check that download, had me worried...it's still not a good idea.

the main problem is the graphics chip itself. not matter what you do short of using an actual video card, you're going to have some weird issues.

It is impossible to overwrite DX10 or 11 with a previous version of DX. Why do you think it's not a good idea? Running DX9 can give you better performance in a DX9 game compared to using the backwards compatibility of DX11.

I believe the biggest difference with AH is the amount of CPU work to calculate the physics model. Many games will install DX9 on your PC when you install them to be sure that you have the latest version of DX9 regardless of which DX version you already have native to your OS.

i just used that download link. figured it would be easier for someone like me to revert back in case of an issue, than to let someone like fish go in blind. you're not actually running dx9 if you have a higher version of dx installed. what actually gets installed is different from what gets downloaded. that directx installer will update components it finds out of date, but your primary directx functionality is whatever highest level is installed. i did notice some directx 9 components that appeared to install/update, which may improve functionality that require directx 9, but i don't have any games to test it with.

that doesn't happen automatically, and if you have a higher version of directx installed, those old installers won't do anything.

hey fish, i tried to look up the specs on that graphics chip you're using and everything i see says you should have an actual ati or nvidia graphics card in your system...  :headscratch:

AMD Radeon™ HD 6450 1GB DDR3
Nvidia® Geforce® GT530
AMD Radeon™ HD 6670 1GB DDR5
AMD Radeon™ HD 6770
Single AMD Radeon™ HD 6870
Nvidia® GeForce® GTX560Ti with 1.25GB Memory
Single 1GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTS 450

were those not options when you bought that system?

...that doesn't happen automatically, and if you have a higher version of directx installed, those old installers won't do anything.

If the game disk version is DX 9.0c it will probably do the same thing it did to your system and update some components. In any case it can't hurt.

Gyrene I looked at the same Dell page.  :D   I assume he has a slightly earlier model. Note the CPU is a 2300 not the 2320.

Captfish sorry that didn't fix it but it was worth trying. Skuzzy may have some advice for you on Monday. As others have mentioned, motherboard graphic chips don't do games well although yours seems better than most. You only have 128 mb of dedicated video memory so turning off skins and anything else that uses video memory should help. Check Waffle's video setting tips in this forum if you haven't already.

fish, go here and type in your service tag number to see what hardware your system shipped with.

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=2&~ck=anavml

if my suspicion is right, you may have your monitor plugged in to the wrong graphics connection on the back of the system.

(Image removed from quote.)
:headscratch:  you must have an early model xps 8300, no actual video card. that suxxorz for gaming too.  :headscratch:  well, you're gonna have to put up with the weird things in ah unless you want to buy a new video card which would also require buying a new power supply because it's a sure bet the one in that system doesn't have enough power for a pci-e x16 video card.
