Did You Like Your Parents?
« on: October 16, 2011, 03:16:22 PM »
You know, I'm still young (compared to some of the guys here), and I still get into fights with my parents every now and then. I know some of you lost your parents, and I know some still live with theirs ( :P). But let me ask you something, did you guys ever liked them? If it weren't for the fact that they were your parents and brought you into this world, and you met them as a stranger, would you have been able to get along with them?

I know I can't. My dad is the quiet, study hard type of person, and I'm the total opposite, I just don't know how guys like him make it through a day staying quiet ALL day.

My mom is the typical ..... you know what. Can't stand her at all and acts like a control freak for every single little thing.

Not to sound like a whining 10 year old, but that's the truth. I love them, I care for them, and they care for me, but god, I think that I'm mature enough to say that 10 years ago, when I said "When I grow up, I'll never be like you", I think I was right.

Give it time, over the next couple of years you will find yourself acting more and more like them.

Yep... Have a kid and realize one day you turned into your dad.  It will mess with your mind.

 :rofl

Like JayHawk said Give it time.

I was exactly like you. I couldn't stand my parents from age 15 to probably my early 20s. Now I think my parents are pretty cool, and we have a great relationship. They become more like friends and less like parents as you get older. It's also very scary how much in common will end up having with them. I used think EXACTLY like you, now I know I was just growing up.  it's not you or really even something you or your parents have control over its just part of the developmental stages in Life.

Just keep disagreeing with them for now and know that one day you'll be peas in pod.

be thank full you have a dad and a mom.....

I was 6 months old when my heroin junky mom brought me to a neighbors house, ask them to watch me, said she would be right back....next time I saw her I was 8, didn't see her again till I was 14, I wouldn't piss on her if she was on fire.

dad...well ya he was my real dad.....but not very nice, and that's an extreme understatement.

all you people who complain about your moms and dads...makes me ...instead of complaining, hug them and say thank you, tell them you are sorry for being such a little PITA.

If I told you some stories about my dad....you would run to yours hug them and say thanx, and never want to let them go.

Not really.  I moved out at 20 after I left school, and I only visit them for the holidays, and maybe talk on the phone three times a year.  It took me 15 years to save enough money to return to school (Purdue), which is what I'm continuing to do now, on my own.  My parents and family has next to nothing to do with my life now, and I don't mind that fact.  And anyone that says you are destined to repeat in your parents footsteps is full of crap.  You have genetic similarities (unless you're adopted), and that's where it ends.  Once you're financially independent and you can live your life how you want and not care what they think or say.  People that ended up like their parents in a bad way have no one to blame but themselves for believing the "superstition" that its supposed to happen (which is crap), or for not choosing to do otherwise.

Interesting topic, i would have to say yes i would of liked them if they were still alive, mom died at 50 in my arms 1986, Dad at 72 in 2005.  My dad was hard working worked for the Burlington Northern RR for 46 years after the Korean war, Mom was like a June Cleaver but like to party lol  we lived in a close knit community, rural country setting on a mini farm, they instilled great values into me and those I'll pass to my Son.

Like I said, I not trying to complain or vent my teenage angst here (which is stupid and pointless), I'm asking what you guys think. I love my parents, but I can't bring myself to get all mushy feelings with them either.

Nobody in my family is mushy at all, never have been.

I would say the following is not going to be the case for all but will fall into the vast majority of circumstances.

I will say this though, (like others did here) you will continue to have disagreements with your parents. Personally I think it comes mostly from differing views from differing experiences. Through time both you and your parents will learn many things. You will learn that your parents are only trying to help you learn through their experience and they will learn that they can not force you to go with their advice once you hit an adult age.

To answer the OP questions though.

I would most likely not hang out with my mother if we were not related and had such a long history of trials together. My father I stopped speaking to back when my daughter was born and never looked back, not even when he passed away in August.

I was thinking the same thing....least he wasn't there till your late teens....I cant even use "drunken" as an excuse for mine, he was just a mean sonofasqueak.....

I will say this about him, he toughened me up for a very hard life and maybe because of the way he treated me and beat me, that allowed me to over come the crazyness that I have been through.

Like I said, I not trying to complain or vent my teenage angst here (which is stupid and pointless), I'm asking what you guys think. I love my parents, but I can't bring myself to get all mushy feelings with them either.

ever have your dad put your head through a door? or routinely smash it against walls and punch you in the face like your a grown man?

you should get those "mushy" feelings for them and express them, before they are gone, or you will regret not having done that, and trust me I am a parent now with many kids it is not an easy job.

I can be in the worst possible moods, but when one of my kids tells me they love me.....there is nothing like it in the world....dont let them go with out telling them EXACTLY how you feel even if it is all Mushy.

I am sorry if I took your post as whining....but its a touchy subject with me, I see all to often people with great parents, treat them (thier parents) like crap and complain about them.....not much angers me more then that.

tell them you love them and give them a huge HUG...watch the smile that comes over your moms face. (even if dad dont smile he feels it inside)

I see that alot with my sons friends some of which i'm also Friends of their parents,it's Sad.   i complained at times but it was always when i was angry at them for my own wrong doings, later in Life i understand everything they were trying to do for me and why they went about it in their way.

Hmmmm..

Squid left his mom Feb 22 this year.  Hasn't spoken to her and has no intentions of speaking to her ever again.  I understand why but it is a tad sad.  On the other hand he and I are ridiculously tight.  Always have been.  Sadly, lately, we've had to put a 'no hitting' rule in effect because he's gotten big enough to really hurt me and, consequently, big enough for me to have to unleash on to hurt him.  We drew the line before anybody got injured  (probably me because he's become a bit of a brick). I haven't taught him ALL of my dirty tricks but ya  :lol

I must have done something right.  Can't imagine what that would have been ;).  But I'll say again... I've had those 'oh lord I'm channeling my dad' moments  :lol

My dad is a good guy but we're not close.  He has about as much a clue of how to be a dad as I do neurosurgery.  But I'll give him his props.  I never wanted for anything growing up.  I always had a roof over my head and food on the table and he worked his butt off to provide that.  I'll take the couple of butt kickings I had to take when he thought I did something I was completely innocent of for that.

I was always closer to my mom but A) I was a rebellious little #@% and my sister was the goodie two shoes straight A type.  Guess who got most of the attention.

Meh.. water under the bridge or over the dam.

Arguing with a parent is a no win proposition.  I'd recommend avoiding it.
