Honestly, $500 or below? Your kid knows when to make a bet.

Just say it was $499.99?  :P

I'll keep searching.

EDIT: I can't find a thing... Like PFactor said, wait for the Black Friday sales.

My advice is to wait a few weeks.  The Black Friday sales are next month, watch the ads to find one you like.

What is the time restraints? Like others have said black Friday is in a few weeks, and if you can wait a little longer the after Christmas before super bowl tv sales aren't that much further off.

PM me with more details, I have 10+ years selling this type of stuff.

What specifically is he going to use with is?  Xbox, Cable, PC <--That's important!)  etc, and how many devices.

What do you want in the near future to do with is?  i.e. like in the next 3-5 yrs

price range?

are you SET on a 40" model, or is there wiggle room for slightly larger/smaller?

is this TV going to use it's own built-in speakers, or do you plan on using a Home theatre in a box (HTIB) or some other receiver?

Do you want to use headphones with it?

Are you particular to LCD, plasma, LED? and if so, why?

are you familar with refresh rates, resolution, power consumption, type of mounting (other then the stand it comes with) and if so, which do you need?

And there's a bunch of other variables, but those are more specific to the application.

Be VERY carefull with black friday deals.

This is not to say that amazing deals do not exist. THEY DO.  But you have to be very cautious.  (I am talking about the world of electronics for this purpose)

Important things to consider are that many of these deals are in such limited quantity it (I'm serious when I say sometimes an individual store might have...say...two)

Another thing to consider is that often retailers specifically purchase items FOR black friday.  These items are designed to do the job that is requested...and NOTHING else!  For example, your significant other wants a GPS...many of the blackfriday deals will have such a product, but in name only, it will technically function (we hope)  but will not really do what is (or should be) expected.  It's kinda like asking for a red ryder bb gun and getting something made by nerf.

When it comes to consumer electronics one has to be somewhat savvy and wary to get the great deals that are out there...as we get closer I'll post some tips on this.

Walmart had a 40 inch Plasma HD Sanjo flatscreen for $336. I ended up getting it.

Its only 720HD and has a very tiny bit of fuzzyness in the background of the screen. but other than that its wonderful. great sound quality. im loving it.  :aok

they also had a 42' inch sanjo 1080HP Plasma flat screen for only $396.

Edit: some on AMAZON.

there is a reason sanyo is so cheap...same as sceptre, insignia, dynex, haier, etc...

vizio has been getting better and better every year, but don't buy their bottom of the line units. dollar for dollar they are very good televisions, just not quite as good as samsung, lg, or the sony bravia series. getting a good quality picture out of a toshiba takes some tweaking, but seems like the last 2 generations have improved on a lot of things that made them not so good.
