A-10 Flyover at football game
« on: October 24, 2011, 06:49:23 PM »
So there's been a lot of military flyovers that I've seen at football games since I've been going to them, which is pretty much since 1992 when I first went to Purdue.  F-16s, B-52, transports, tankers, WW2 aircraft, and I think even a B-2 Spirit.  But this Saturday's game was a flyover by a pair of A-10s.  And there was definitely a greater buzz about this flyover than all the previous ones, both before the game and after.

I usually don't get into the stadium until right at kickoff, but this game, because of the flyover, I actually forced myself to leave the tailgate in time to make the National Anthem... I don't do that very many games since Joe Tiller retired.

Nevertheless, it was worth it, some video:

So is the A-10 the most popular aircraft with the public behind maybe the F-22?  It seems like it.

On Racquet Lake in the Adirondack's, 10hp outboard, quiet calm morning in August. Me my wife and 10 year old son.

Putting across the lake with all 10 horses set free when ...kaboom an F-16 is pulling up off a target run on my boat. Big fat contrails off the wing roots in a hard climbing right turn off my bow, exhaust ripping the sky with sound, the pilot clearly visible thru the canopy. My wife and son are screaming, scared the hell out of them. I am pumping my fist and cheering.

And then ...kaboom an A-10 was behind him and ambushed us while the F-16 distracted us. A-10 is pulling hard and follows the F-16.

My thanks to the National Guard pilots, not sure where they fly from.

One of my fondest memories from when I was working at General Dynamics was watching Neil Anderson take an F16 out over Carswell and shake it down.

Pig if that happens, and I hope it does, let us know.  I want to see that for sure <S>

Hell, I'm pretty much sure it's a forum rule to announce if and when you get your wings even, lol.

The biggest jolt I've ever had was when my buddy and I were shooting prairie dogs south west of Newcastle, WY in a the Thunder Basin National Grassland.  We were sitting with our backs to a small butte looking southward at about 10am on a very bright sunny morning when.... ROOOOOOAAAARRRRR.... directly over our heads shoots a very low flying B1B with its bombay doors open.  It was low enough we could see the markings on the underside.  After it flew for awhile it turned westward and then back north way out over the basin far away from us.  It was dealthy quiet and all we could hear was the gentle breeze and some prairie dogs barking.   :lol

Seeing that B1B that close, that low, with doors open was a rush and an awesome experience.   :aok

I see the F16's of the SDANG flying all around Sioux Falls, it is a good sight to see.  When I lived in Iowa, Sioux City used to have one of the top ANG units on the nation when they were a fighter wing, but politics shut it down and the fighters went to Des Moines and Sioux City got air tankers.  Oh what fun they are to watch fly around.   :huh

i went to a football game about 7 years ago, they had a squadron of F-14's flying over the field. had to say that was the coolest thing ive ever seen.

what i'd really like to do is hop into a F-14 and just mess around up there :lol
