who are u........
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:12:47 PM »
when your flying/playing aces high?

after being in and out of this game and on the boards for a few years now, and seeing many different types of personality types appear and disappear amongst my fellow players, i ask you who are you when you put this cartoon wonderland addiction into true perspective?

i personally have never viewed it as anything more than just another video game. i cannot even pretend for a moment that i am a real WWII fighter pilot, tanker or Bomber Jockey. i do not find, nor derive, my honor, integrity or sense of self respect and worth from it, i do not stress over how great i am seen to be or how feared i may be by other players and i have no ambition to be anything more than simply entertained while i waste hours of my life interacting with the masses in the cartoon airways. i take none of it seriously and put it down just as fast as i pick it up with out reservation or a feeling of loss.

the only sign of withdrawal i may suffer from, when stepping away from time to time, is missing the funny sarcastic and down right cruel/borderline abusive sense of humor of my squaddies. (there is nothing like being a member of the Muppet's, they just evil to the core!) but aside from that, at the end of the day this is now, has always been and will forever be just a game for me.

what about you.............is it just a game or..........?

p.s. if you cant answer honestly then just don't answer. you only waste your own time if you lie.

what i am is just another guy passing through town...

just a game, so whats the point in taking it seriously? if you take it seriously then your still stuck in that "office cubicle" work mode. no fun in that.

I'm pretty much the same guy in game and on the boards as I am in real life.  I like to be nice because there's really nothing to be gained from being a jerk in the virtual world.  But I do have my very dark side and my son describes me as 'evil'.  Just because I have thoughts doesn't mean I act on them.  If I did the zero growth population people wouldn't have a platform.

I fly here because of my love of WWII aviation, and games from my childhood such as Red Baron and Aces Over Europe and the Pacific.  I find it infinately more gratifying to shoot down a live person, than a bot... and I do feel a certain sense of accomplishment when killing a particularly tenacious enemy, or dying a good death.

When my adrenaline gets going, and unfortunately it does... I can get angered by what I consider 'cheep', but then I'm just as guilty as anyone else of the cheepness.

Over the past couple years, I've gotten more enjoyment out of the GV aspect of the game, so that's a plus... but I really enjoy flying high ENY fighters and especially medium bombers (P38G/A20) into dogfights.  I could probably play the game for score and k/d spread and switch to a Pony or Dora exclusively, but that's not fun for me.

So who am I you ask?

I am the Deathbringer from the Sky!

When I play Aces, I can imagine I'm a 109 pilot defending the Reich from an allied air raid, or a Tiger ace, holding back the red-tide in East Prussia. I can picture myself rolling through the sweltering heat of North Afrika, or across the endless rolling steeps of Russia.

I've always felt closer to my German side of the family when playing the game, as I'm sure all who have relativly close family members who fought in WWII do.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

The real world is tough enough.  While I have moments where I get a bit serious about the game, it's rare.

My historical inspiration for +Tiff in AW and then CorkyJr is AH is a combination of "Guppy" in the book "Nanette" by Edwards Park, and P/O Percy Prune, who was a cartoon disaster pilot used by the RAF in WW2 for training in a monthly journal called "Tee Emm"

Guppy was a P38 pilot in the 39th FS, 35th FG, this of course why the BBS name is Guppy35.  He became an ace while trying to drink himself out of combat as he hated it so much.

I was given a little wartime book called "Prune's Progress" by a Spitfire XII pilot named Peter Cowell.  It traces the family history of P/O Prune and the second to last is his father who was a WW1 flyer, "Ropey" Prune who had 27 aircraft destroyed confirmed, all British.

I think I've lived up to, or down to as the case may be, Guppy, Ropey and Percy Prune quite well in AH.  That's Pilot Officer Prune in my avatar btw.

I play this game because it is a challenge. I am a gamer and this has been my first and only flight sim. I do find the history interesting of course which is another reason to stay but its not what drew me here. I picked my name from a Russian ace who isn't well known and doesn't have many victories 16 or so. Of his 16 though 6 were aces from JG 54 with a combined total of 4 Knights Crosses and 397 victories.

I won't say I don't care its just a game of course because I do care enough to have a BBS account and do like to keep my KD above 2 and land lots of kills and pretend I am a uber elite fighter pilot because its part of the fun.

I don't think I'm significantly different in real life, on the BBs or in the game.  It's a game, a passtime, a way to relax.  I try not to interact on 200 mostly by ignoring it.  I interact minimally by vox with countrymen.  I'm a loner in RL just as I am in the game.

I started not caring about score/rank, ended up playing for score/rank and once again don't care about score/rank.  I mostly fly high cover base defense but always end up on the deck.  I don't mind going in at any odds although lower odds are better.  I don't mind going in with any plane and I've played the whole set exensively but British and German planes have always been my favorites due to my fascination with the European air war and the battle for Britan.  That said I don't ever imagine myself as an actual pilot at the time although the BOG scenario and Brook's substitute for Coral Sea drew me in.

I like to play the whole game to various degrees so GVing is a big part of my on-line time tied with fighters and decreasing to attack then bombing.  I don't often try to capture anything.

I live for a great fight and a win.  One on one or one on multiples.  Hell, I even like a good one on multiple even if I lose as long as I made a good showing of it (I've seen my share of me on 10 or more... 3-4 is manageable depending on the match-ups, more is not).

I view the game as a chess match, both in watching the map deciding where to play (usually where it seems my country needs me most which usually means outnumbered) as well as individual fights.  The other night I pawned a guy with a 5+ K/D ratio while I was under 1 K/D, both of us in K-4's.  I guess no one ever told him he had flaps.  I felt good about that.  He logged immediately.  I guess he didn't.  The next fight I was pawned by a Pony D when I deployed flaps and he held E and danced on my head.  Oh well, so it goes.  I kept playing.

Yes, I get frustrated at times but try not to vent.  If another 200's or PM's me I may or may not respond.

I'm not the best in the game, never will be and don't care.  As long as I'm not the worst (I don't think I am) and still have fun I'm satisfied.

That's about who I am.

I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

I play (when I can) due to an obsession with flight and WWII - always been this way. I am the same way in R/L as I am ingame - and I try to maintain my own standards in both (low as they may be)

I play for fun, the immersion in the Scenario's and the friends I've made in game (a few of which I've met in person) - all that I've met have been good people, and fun to fly with and against.

I'm the worst pilot ingame ya know!!!

It's all unrealistic crap requested by people who want pie in the sky actions performed without an understanding of how things work and who can't grasp reality.

I started playing some time in feb. 07 as SAJ73, this being my first ever flight sim. I started off in a spit, flying with a mouse and still remember my first take off in the DA arena with the attitude 'here I come, now we'll show them'..  :lol

Took me about as long as it takes to fly out to the furball to understand that it was a bit more to this game than just flying out there and popping down planes doing flat turns.. Kept upping and getting more and more confused about how people I where chasing infront of me could suddenly disappear in a turn and instantly end up behind me shooting me down?!  :furious :noid

Well, time went by and i got into the aspect of really urging to learn this game and how to really fly the planes. Got me a stick and also got me alot of good help in the start by a few great sticks. One of them later took me into his squad, (TAx57 of TA's Aerofighters Inc.) and I'm still in that squad. Thank You TA. :salute  :aok

I also want to mention a couple of other good helpers in the start, Longbawd being one of them. He took his time to train me for several nights, and set up appointments throughout the week just for me. I truly appreciate that, tho I have not seen Longbawd online since back then.. If you by any chance may read this, I hope all is well.  :salute
And 67Yankee also took his time to help me out alot in the beginning. Ty Sir, hope all is well with you too if you read this.  :salute

My favorite planes of today are first of all hogs, but I also fly other planes. Started to like the 109 more and more lately..

Me as a person: I enjoy this game as a great way to have fun, and I do my best to keep it fun. Meaning that even if I am not among the top pilots in this game, I like to give my opponents as good a fight as I can in attempt to also  make it fun for others. I twist and turn alot, and that's just the way I like to fight, close and on the edge of falling out of the sky mostly. I don't care if I get killed as long as the fight was good, but I can get a little tired of the game if I end up being vultched or hoed over a longer timeperiod with no good fights in between. (We've all had those days I guess) Then I might just log and come back at a better time when I finally had enough of it.

I used to fly DA only back in the days, but I have started flying more and more Main Arenas now and usually find a squaddie or ten to team up with. Even if I am a bit of a loner, I don't talk on vox mainly because I am Norwegian and just don't feel comfortable with speaking english.. I type instead, as I type more or less fluent. And it has never been a problem with my squaddies, one day I might pick up the mic also..  :P

I had a leave from the game for a period of about half a year a while back, as real life kicked in. And when I decided to come back I came back as 'Essay73'.  As SAJ73 always made people ask how I pronounced it, or they just called me SA- (Thereby Essay). And 73 is the year I was born, simple as that.  :)

I have also grown very fun with the AvA, and try to go there as much as possible when I see the arena populated with 2 or more people. It usually gets crowded in a matter of minutes as soon as a couple of guys hang there for a good 10minutes, and then the fun begins.  :D

I get well along with most people online, and don't experience much drama on vox or 200. I may see alot of drama on 200, but I don't care to take part in that. That's not why I log on to this game!

I have got alot of good friends during my time playing AH2, and even though I don't meet them in person I still appreciate their friendship. You can never get too many friends!   :aok

So there you have me more or less, I am myself in game, BB's or real life as I see no point in trying to be better (or worse). So see you in the skies, and hopefully we can merge into one of those epic fights people just talk about,  or wing up in the chase of virtual glory and fame.  :aok   :salute

Im that guy who will up at a capped field because it needs defense, the one that will drive a goon off a capped field to help a gv holding the town, the one who flys under 65ft to drop ords at a base that needs it gone, the same one that will laugh like a wild man as I dodge 5 bad guys on the deck in my "super" Brewster. The same that will fly anything in the game and do anything to cause as much trouble as I can before starting again.

Well I had some family remembers that served the reich, and some that served the U.S. so I kinda bias maybe. This is the reason why I don't fly RAF or Japanese....
