P-40 N Canopy Asymmetry
« on: November 10, 2011, 12:18:38 PM »
I was wondering if any one could explain why the canopy is different from the pilots left side to the right side? I assume from looking at a few P-40N photo's that the left quarter-light in the windscreen could be opened for ventilation. Beyond that I don't understand the additional metal (I assume armor) on the left side canopy that's not on the right?

Any thoughts?

I was wondering also. I had thought they were symmetrical on the real deal, myself.

I believe this is because the canopy frame could be opened from the left side.

An opening/panel makes sense, even some Bf109s had a similar for flares and whatnot.

I wonder why they reworked the sliding part of the canopy to match?

What i find interesting is the fact with the x4 gun package it almost covers the entire muzzle flash on each wing, maby could have helped during dawn and dusk raids.  :rock

Beefed up for hand hold to pull sliding canopy back...just like a horse always mount on the left, glass would get damaged or marred being grabbed and pulled all the time. IMO

How would it be helpfull for a dawn/dusk raid to have your view of the flash covered? Right side wouldn't be reduced at all either.

Because those flashes would break your low-light vision temporarily.  You would be correct about the right side, though.

I'm not sure if having the direct flash hidden would be all that beneficial. Yeah, you don't get the full flash of light, but its not like its in any way hard to notice.

It's surprising how much simply blocking the source of light helps keep your low-light vision.

But either way it's not really relevant, otherwise both sides would have it.
