decisions..
« on: November 10, 2011, 06:49:09 PM »
so, aftert much debate on CPU and GPU i decided...

MSI R6850 PE/OC. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127566&Tpk=MSI%20R6850%20PE%2fOC

Gigabytre G1.Guerrilla 1366 mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128481

12 GB (4GBX3) G.Skill Sniper series: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231464

and the i7-970 chip.

all total: $730.30

selling my current insides for $230. $500.30 out of pocket, not bad for a complete redo inside....

yea.. in april. didnt have to do anything, but im looking for the future. everything is still new to market, but i would rather spend some money now to get an edge in the future. good price for everything as a whole, couldn't pass it up. what would have been almost $1200 for only 500. too good to be true.

I can see why you're buying 12gb given that 24gb max motherboard.. but holy crap dude you're seriously wasting money with that motherboard. Not to mention that video card to boot.

You can't be thinking to spend big now so you can upgrade it in years to come... that simply doesn't happen. In 2 years time that motherboard will be obsolete in terms of supported memory type (THE biggest bottleneck in upgrading when it comes to performance) and cpu socket. That motherboard ONLY supports up to DDR3 2200 and the top memory type is DDR3 2400 ... which has been out for almost a year now. Aka, it is not long before the DDR 2600->3200 comes out in the market (or maybe even DDR4..DD3 has been around for 4+ years now).

Same thing with the video card. Although that card is SERIOUSLY kickarse as it is...it's extreme overkill. All games are designed to run on mid-end tiers.

You're paying a ton of money there for an insignificant performance benefit imo.

If you want to spoil yourself you could put that money into components that really, really last a long time.

Aka, get yourself a freakin' huge flatscreen monitor...or upgrade your computer case to something ridiculously fancy.... or just for kicks get yourself a solid state hard drive (which does improve game performance nicely).

...or buy that awesome thrustmaster Warthog joystick.. or get the latest Track IR :P

(or both!)

I was looking to get a triple screen setup, but I would had to get a new video anyway. from this point I dont plan on making many, if any changes, for a while to come now. Must be prepared for the future when I can start adding spice to my setup. no sense in buying components I cant use. what good are three monitors when I cant have a decent view of them in other games except AH?

The MSI 6850 is considered a midrange card.

you have a very fast cpu and a crappy mid-range vc.  guess what is going to slow down your system?  I know money is tight, but perhaps a different cpu or mobo and better card for same amount of money would make your system faster. imho.

this is true, but if it bottlenecks my machine that much I can overclock it a slight amount, or wait a few months if it is a terrible bottleneck on the system and get a second card and CrossFire them, or get a better card overall altogether. time will tell which route I do if it is that much of a burden on my system. Hoping to pick up a copy of BF3, that is my only real concern for the system as of current. AH I doubt ill have any issues running with full eye candy. the 5750 I replaced ran it with all eye candy on and shadow resolution at 2048 textures.
