I always joked I wish we could place writing on front of tanks so I could add "YOU'RE GONA MISS" - although i'm sure when someone zooms and reads I will be dead pretty quick

I think this would be a fantastic idea!
The small stenciling would take up much less space than a squad logo on your plane.
It could go through a similar approval process.

I would love to add my nose art to the plane...  as well.  It would be neat if there were little customizeable variables for the pilots asside from just the skins and convergence.

Well I suspect it would be pretty simple to have your call sign / name show up under the canopy rail. As I understand it once you're in rage the game automatically picks this up, that's how we see it in the film viewer so a simple check box in flight preferences, or graphics preferences to turn it on, and (with more work of course) it would show when you're close to another plane.

Nose art or custom lettering would be much more work and is probably not practical.

I can barely see squad insignia on a plane from D200 on max resolution and settings. I doubt Im going to see tiny letterings. It'd be cool to see for Screenshots and what not, but in a dogfight or formations, you would barely make it out.
