new sound card

Well I made the big jump and finally upgraded to Windows 7. Along with all the wonderful challenges of changing OSes  I found that my poor old Sound Blaster Live card is not supported by Windows 7. While I have a work around so I have sound, my mic doesn't work. So now I'm looking for a new sound board.

Any recommendations? I'm not looking to take out a loan to get one, but I don't want a cheapo either.

Just for info, if you have vista drivers for it, it will work with them under win7.

Like I said I have it working. With the vista drivers you have to miss label it, and the mic doesn't work.

what exact model of SB Live do you have, Fugi?

I have 2 seperate PC's I have put together that are using old SB Live sound cards without any issues using win 7 64 ult.

setting up your mic in windows 7 is quite different than other older windows OS's  is a pita in some ways.......

as for a new Sound card, I like my ASUS Xonar sound card pretty well..... and my Creative Fatality extreme gamer pro etc/etc   sound card ....

I have a 10-12 year old card. It has 5.1 surround and uses the old analog plugs. I went to the creative site and they don't even list the card(no longer supported). An intensive search found a few work arounds using the vista drivers or KX3550 drivers, but the best I could get was a pair of speakers working and the mic NOT working.

I've got an X-Fi Extreme Gamer; <$100.  It works well but I'm still using XP.

Who has a sound card running under Windows 7? Which card is it and are you happy with it?

I have the "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional" model number 70SB088600002 with the EMU20K1 chip (running on this PC).

Previously, I had the "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio" which has the "X-Fi" name but not the EMU20K1 chip.  It has the lesser CA0106 chip, same as an older "Audigy" card.

The Fatal1ty card has the multiple outputs I need for my Turtle Beach 5.1 headset, and from a purely subjective point of view, I now seem to have smoother frame rates and fewer sound glitches in AH using the newer card with the real X-Fi chip.

YMMV.

Just for the heck of it have you tried removing your sound card and trying your onboard sound (if you have it)?  My motherboard has 5.1 surround integrated into it and I run it through my HPA2 headset and the sound is really, really good!

At least do it as a test.  You might find that a separate sound card may no longer be necessary!

I know there were performance issues in the past doing this but I haven't noticed any kind of slowdown on mine.

I have the PX21 headset from them.  Works great my sound is Realtek
