Right but its progress, and they see it in use on tanks

read again to see how much energy is needed for just a few strands, for a whole tank a nuclear reactor would be needed.

Semp, not looking to start things, but where do you see any mention of how much energy is needed to use it? I am certain a great deal is needed, but as far as the posted article is concerned I didn't see any mention of it.

If this is actually real, I would assume it would be something I would keep out of the media.

too late though if it is real. sadly. once the media gets wind of it theyre gonna blow everything out of proportion, as they always do. how many other countries  also have access to our media and will jump on the bandwagon that we dont want jumping on. pretty well just signed a contract with no money to fund it..

Yeah because on the battlefield you won't hear them at all. :noid

Yeah, because everything is dead quite on a battlefield.  Cannons, artillery, machine guns, and your own tank's engines won't hide the sound of their tanks at all  :ahand.

It would have its uses (think of ambush potential), just not as many as if our tanks were silent.

Yep you really told me.  Unless the armor is right beside a gun line then artillery is not really an issue.  If you are taking incoming rounds you have more to worry about than "stealth" tanks.  And machine guns won't come close to masking the sound of the jet engine powering the tank.

No, not any one of those things will mask the sound by itself.

But if you're taking intermitent shelling, firing your own weapon, with high-caliber artillery pounding away in the background, and someone cuts loose with a machine gun 20ft away, while one of your own tanks fires its main gun, you're probably not going to notice the rumbling of a few slowly moving tanks (if you're hauling bellybutton at 60mph, the dust trail will give you away) as they creep up to the jump-off point for an attack.

And the goal probably wouldn't be to reach your objective undetected (its a 60 ton tank for gods sake), but to remain undetected untill you get close enough that they can't stop you in time, or untill you shoot first.

Like I said, there would still be many uses, just not so many as if you weren't trying to hide a big 60 ton behemoth that sounds like the trump of doom as it rattles and clanks its way forward.

Enemy tanks wouldn't see you at all (at most, they'd just notice their range finder gives a closer reading than expected if they sweep it across you). You would be near completly invisible as long as you remain still.
