Red Army WW2 Photos
« on: November 15, 2011, 12:27:20 PM »
We always see a lot of old photos from the US or the Germans but seems on the Russian front they aren't as common. Saw this link posted on another and figured I'd share it.

The problem with Soviet pictures and film is that much of it was staged for the camera and adhered to the party line. See any dead Soviet troops in those pics? Maybe I missed them if there were.

Of course the allied pictures and film adhered to their own party line but I think the photos and some of the films were more honest.

...Wow, that was uncalled for.

I saw these pictures earlier this week, one thing that I found interesting was that the bombers pictured were American.

I'm Sector95 in-game! :-D

Yes. As clearly as it is insulting to the dead. Apparently you think those are the only Soviet pictures from WW2.

All sides did the same and if you don't think they did you are wrong. One of the most famous was the flag raising at Imo Jima

While at first it wasn't allowed to show US dead in news reel films shown in the states or in photographs in US publications (as not to damage moral on the home front), it wasn't until the Battle of Tarawa that was reversed and the US military started to release pictures of US dead for publication.  Also, neither raising of the flag (there were actually two) on Iwo Jima were staged.

What about the flag raising?  It wasn't staged, if you think it was you need to do some reading.

I talked to a Phillipines vet once that said the return of Macarthur (leaving Higgins boat to shore) film and photos
where staged, it took several shots and takes to get the one HE wanted.
The guy was very down on Macarthur, saying that he deserted his troops and post, etc.

Oh and here's a link with many WW2 photos to include lots of Russian Army

Here's another one.

Oh wait, that's Katyn Forest.  I don't think the Soviets staged this one.

Iwo... the first flag was small and an attachment was sent to raise a larger flag so all the troops on island and sea could see it.

Nothing was staged. The pictured pulled from many was just a picture as it happened.

"Out of the corner of my eye, I had seen the men start the flag up. I swung my camera and shot the scene. That is how the picture was taken, and when you take a picture like that, you don't come away saying you got a great shot. You don't know."
