Flutes were rather easy, I wanted a challenge, so I became a trom boner. The flute wasn't loud enough to be in the band.

Rhythm don't me squat when you're playing a song that changes time every couple of measures (3/4 - 4/4 or 7/4 however you want to count it....)

cheers back at you.. but regardless of the COUNT or MEASURE... you still got to keep rhythm....... it is the same  rhythm =  beat ........ , I don't care if you playing Brass, winds, woods or whatever  you got to keep rhythm/count.....  F it up and the whole song is screwed....

unless there is some new way of doing it that I am clueless about..... but then again  I study the guitar/banjo/mandalon..... I don't play no brass

the drums  or bass ( or both ) are the ones that "keep rhythm" .... or  "keep count".......... if the Drummer or Bass is no good then none of you are........ ( am thinking Tuba  for Bass in this scenario, since we talking brass... )

but again, cheers

Keeping time is just another way of saying it.  Think of a clock, if it don't keep time it's worthless.

Pfft...horn players......they never make rehearsal, they show up 5 minutes before the gig, they want their pay after the first set so they can leave before the last set saying " My lips are bleeding! ".

Only thing worse is a harmonica player. He shows up 20 minutes before the gig and wants his money now, then insists on playing a solo nearly every song and every verse.  And as a group harmonica players have the worst sense of rhythm.

And Uptown....they like to called Flautists.  :lol

No I would say keeping the internal beat is more important.  Rhythm is just the way the notes are written on the page.  Being able to play on or slightly behind the best for a better feel is extremely hard and take years to develop.  You can't keep the rhythm you can only keep the beat.  Rhythm != Beat.

I play guitar, trying to learn blues harp and used to play sax in high school. My pervious post was just a joke as I'm a big Jethro Tull fan. Playing any instrument, whether it be a concert grand or a pair of spoons is cool in my book.  :aok
