I need another book to read
« on: November 20, 2011, 07:05:24 PM »
Like the title says.

I went to lay in bed and read a book when I realized that I was on the last few pages of my current read. (Sea Of Glory: America's Voyage Of Discovery, The U.S. Exploring Expedition 1838-1842/Nathaniel Philbrick)

I'm looking for history. WWII is preferred, but I'll consider just about anything.

No fiction please.

Anyway, help me decide what my next Amazon purchase is going to be.

I always suggest 'Dune' by Frank Herbert. Whether you like fiction or not the man hardly touches scifi stuff. Its all about the human condition and potential. He's the Shakespeare of fiction.

Non-fiction I'd suggest 'Stone Age Economics' and 'The Moral Animal'. "The Selfish Gene" is also quite good. These are Anthropology books that are sometimes used as university textbooks... its very, very good.

History related... don't know of any sry.

"Goodbye Darkness"  William Manchester.  As powerful a memoir of a WW2 Marine as there is.   "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge would be a very close second.

"Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", "Ship of Ghosts" or "Neptune's Inferno" all by James D. Hornfischer if you prefer USN in the Pacific.  All must haves for a good library on WW2

I've got many more suggestions if you want them, but these I've re-read lately.

Check out The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. The memoir of a German soldier fighting the Russians ABCs eventually being captured by the Americans near Berlin after his unit is driven back to Germany by the red army.  It's excellent!

"Why The Allies Won" by Richard Overy

"Patton: A Genius For War" by Carlo D'este

I found both of these books to be very interesting

If you can, go to the exchange at your nearest military base.

I know at JBER (Ft.Richardson & Elmendorf new fancy combined base name) they have a really great selection of military literature.

Thanks for the tip, but I think the nearest installation to me is in Missouri. Maybe Ohio or the Dakotas, not sure.

We used to have K.I. Sawyer right up the road. Unfortunately budget cuts forced it's closure and now it is a crime ridden cesspool. I sure do miss those B-52's flying fast and low over the tree tops. They made quite an impression.

Not WWII, but still good reads.

The Things They Carried - Tim O'Brien

Knight of Germany: Oswald Boelcke - Johannes Werner

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.
