Puffy ack
« on: November 27, 2011, 10:20:19 AM »
In Aces High a huge proportion of your time is spent doing pointless things, I don't wanna fly transit 10-15 minutes to a fight to have my wing blown off by the second burst of AI puffy ack even though I'm at 400+ mph yet theres always something with this game be it puffy, pilot wound, radiator hit etc etc that means you don't get to the good part of this game often enough.

I remember Hitech arguing with someone once in the forums about realism something about a supercharger manual switchover and the reasoning he gave why he didn't include it in the game was it wouldn't be fun, well flying 15 minutes to a fight and getting constantly insta-pwned by AI puffy without ever seeing a human opponent isn't fun eithier its a waste of a player's time and long term his patience with the game.

I think I've been taken down by puffy ack once in the last 100 hours of time in game. I don't see what the big problem is.

Puffy ack blows me out of the sky everytime I go near it usually on the first or second burst. Another reason I rarely fly.

Ive had a 262 killed by the first burst of flak in my area 2-3 months ago.
Was rtb'ing to a base which happened to have a knit cv hiding off shore, First flak shot got my engine. Dove down trying to get to the field. Then get killed by another puffy ack shot.this was 2 weeks ago
During the summer, I had an entire b17 formation taken out by a flak shot. herd the flak burst, then instant tower. that's just ridiculous.

Experienced the clairvoyant accuracy of auto-puffy twice yesterday:

-First time was attacking low Lancs bombing our port.  The very first (no, it's no exaggeration) puff lit my undamaged plane on fire (has happened before - Jug lights up awfully easy compared to the stories of real ones surviving incredible damage.  But that's a different topic) and the Lanc got the kill - despite not landing a single ping on me.  :bhead
-Another sortie, my 109 went insta-kaboom from a single puffy hit, despite being far away from the CV.  No kill credit was awarded.  :bhead

Slow and low bombers just come lumbering in, straight and level.  Much more often than not, they deep 6 the carrier and get away clean.

There are very few things wrong with the game from a design standpoint, but the AI puffy is probably the worst.

For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his Gods."

I avoid CV's like the plague with a perkie plane because of the Puffy model.  Also, after killing people, I tend to leave the CV area because everyone gets butthurt and jumps in a 5" if they get shot down.  Within minutes, a good CV fight is nothing but dweebs sitting on 5"s ruining the fight, then THEY complain when a bomber comes in and sinks their CV... like they were actually doing anything worthwhile to defend it.

thats why u see ppl circling above their cv's at 16K waiting to vulch low incomming bombers    "OR"

thats why u see ppl always running to cv ack even in 1 on 1 sit reps, BEFORE u even make first merge pass.

Taken down is only a little worse than a radiator leak or an oil leak, which happens all the time.

Lots of threads on this,i don't expect anything is going to change though,it took how many years of players complaining about split arenas before anything was done. What i learned from the time i have been playing is stay away from it at all cost,i to hate being killed by AI ,its not why i play this Sim.

I hate it when your happily flying flat and level, your out of reach of anyone. AND BANG, you look around nothing and then tonnes of puffy goes off.
Super accurate first shot puffy takes your oil or radiator and your left feeling sorry for yourself that you can't possibly be that unlucky.

I was flying a G14 in and around 10miles of a CV not so long ago, and I got hit by puffy, while furballing, 3 times in quick succession.
It went like this, Bang - Radiator... Bong - oil... Bang wing tip. Flip over, crash, tower, Explicit language ensues.

I love it best when some dweeb thinks he can rope you and as you climb within 200 yards of him and at 3001 alt and are about to pull the trigger, puff you are gone.

Lol, just witnessed a enemy con lit on fire by his own puffy ack. Him and I were dogfighting, doing a few loops when all of a sudden, I look around and see a trail of flames. Puffy ack is a terrible thing in this game, remove it already.  :bhead

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

A lot of times the AI puffy ack will give away the enemy's CV position. I killed 3 this weekend by just accidentally stumbling upon them. That's about the only thing I like about the stuff.  :D

Weird thing is:
when theres a set of buffs coming at 7k to drop the cv, in most cases he survives (unless the manned puffy gets him). As an opposition, when a single fighter, let it be slow, fast, flying straight or maneuvering, is much likely to being hit, in many cases by the first pop as it climbs above 3k. Example: when i saved a cv from a set of 24s coming at 12k, right when i removed the last ones right wing, the own puffy liten up my 262. Or, seen a heavy f4u coming at 3.5k, was wepping my 109 to catch him in a shallow climb, he dropped ords and turned back to merge with me. Right at the moment of the merge, i broke the 3k boarder, that pufy got us both: he instantly died, i lost my left wing. In both cases, it was like "wtf *******************" haha  : D

Seriously, i dont think its good this way.
