S.Pz.Abt 509 King Tiger skin
« on: November 28, 2011, 02:57:25 PM »
Another winter GV skin for the collection, just the Tiger I left to do now. This one is a King Tiger of S.Pz.Abt 509 based near Budapest in Hungary in spring 1945. Some of the whitewash has eroded away revealing the base camouflage underneath, particularly on the lower parts of the tank.

This unit took part in Germany's last major offensive in March 1945, Operation Spring Awakening. This was designed to recapture Budapest and encircle two Soviet armies. Like the earlier Ardennes offensive in the west, initial surprise allowed rapid gains at first. However the plan was hopelessly ambitious, the advance soon ground to a halt and was then reversed with heavy losses.

One of the photos I used for this skin can be found here.

IMO it is not likely we will see a winter MA terrain any time soon. For it to look good winter textures for the various ground types plus all the buildings and fauna (snow covered trees and hangars etc.) would be needed. However HTC don't like too many custom textures in the individual MA terrains because it makes the terrain's download size too big. Remember MA terrains have to be redownloaded by most players every time that terrain is altered, even if its just a single spawn point that is moved.

The alternative is for HTC to add a set of winter (and/or desert) terrain textures to the base download of the game so MA terrain designers can use them without increasing their terrain's download size. However I doubt HTC would consider it worth the effort and the increase in the base download size.

I'm submitting these skins as for the MA anyway, but really I expect they'll only really get much use in special events featuring terrains with custom winter textures.

BTW Debrody, the photo I posted a link to above has a signpost visible on it. It's not very legible but you can make out Budapest and some other places written on it.

There was a winter western Europe map that we played scenarios on in the SEA that would be great to have in the MA.  What I don't understand is why doesn't someone take a winter map that already exists and "simply" take a base template and apply it over top?  Sure, some people would have to take some time to download the new map but it wouldnt be any different than if HTC would be adding a typical and very abundant green type map.
