tell me what I'm doing wrong here
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:24:08 PM »
I was up high looking for bombers but naturally found an F4U-4.  :bhead
Things start going bad around the 2:15 mark when we get into a tight descending spiral.  Anytime I get into something like that, I always get out turned.
Would appreciate some kind of strategery to get out of that.

Anyway here is the film (4:18 long):

I can see nothing wrong. Both of you were evenly matched the whole fight. Great throttle and flap control. The deciding factor was just the planes. An F4U4 will always out work a 110.

I couldn't tell if you were using any rudder, but rudder work helps big time in a rolling fight.

Snuggie,

You did nothing wrong at all, in fact flew surprisingly well :aok.  Should be the -4 on here asking why he took so long, after all any sort of rolling fight is a hog's world, and far from a 110's.  I'd chalk that one up as a moral victory, the fact that you got close to a guns solution was testament to your good flying.  Kinda like dogfighting an A20 vs a K4 in an energy fight (K4's fight), yea I got myself in a bad situation but if I got close to enough to think I got guns, I flew an E fight in an A20 fairly well.

Quite a lot wrong here from the off imo your pulling the plane as tight as you can from the off and chopping throttle squandering an alt advantage.

I wouldn't have pulled straight for the gun solution from the off, even then at 00:20 to 00:30 is what really gets you in trouble.

You are accepting bad angles if at that sequence you had went slightly more vert then rolled inverted and used some negative G on the stick on the downstroke you could have saved E and used a wider faster line through your loop.

You know hes gonna be slower and less able to maneuver at the top in this sequence, thats were you want to time your loop for the guns solution. Especially against an uber plane in an inferior plane you want to get him burning his E from the off through threat of guns.

Looking at the film again after Pervert's post, he's correct.  I didn't realize the -4 commited to the fight at the alt disadvantage it had.  A move to the verticle, once the -4 commited verticle would have still probably gotten you a 1k alt advantage off the bat and Co-speed.  Then use the Alt advantage to gain speed and cut the corner for a shot.  Fight can't last long or the -4 will be Co-E with you very quickly.  What you are trying to do is, what I call "a knuckle up fight".  The theory is this, two identical planes same speed but one is 2k above the other, both planes fight the verticle with identical moves, both planes run out of energy at the same time.  The higher plane now has 2k of alt to work with to gain an angle on the lower plane that can no longer fight up (high plane can now fight nose down.)

In my orignal post I thought the -4 was not commited and trying to get up to you.  Therefore you tried to eliminate him before he became a factor along with the approaching 109.  In which case, looking at his airspeed at he merge, he was still awfully fast to drop on.  If he was slow when you dropped on him (no or little verticle potential), this may have worked, or at least made him break low.  Should have paid more attention to the tape.  But I still think you flew that 110 very well, once commited to the situation.

Thank you all for your help.  :salute

I saw "F4U" and figured on pressing the fight right away, before he zoomed 10k over my head.  Didn't realize a 110 could hang that long in the vertical with a Corsair.  Definitely should have went up first.

I'd have to agree with what's been said already...

Nice job flying the 110, but you had an alt advantage that you could have used to more advantage, especially when he decided to come up after you.

Rolling inverted to prep for your attack was fine, and it my have been what baited him into coming up?  As soon as he did that you could have rolled level again and gone up yourself, potentially roping him.  Cutting throttle and diving in was your biggest mistake.  It gave up an E advantage that would have been valuable, and made it easier for him to eventually even-out the E-states, and eventually have the cards in his favor.

I liek how you call it a ufo, but then do so well staying with him.  Makes me wonder about the 110 model, lol!

Good advice Mtnman.  The plane in the film didn't get a chance to demonstrate the hoverflaps at low speed.  The Corsair is a great plane and quite a few players routinely clobber me in it.  It is a UFO and I'm a Hellcat fan.   :P
