Radon Gas?
« on: December 07, 2011, 09:06:28 PM »
Well, for all of you living in Wisconsin, mainly in the southern part by Madison/Milwaukee, and on the western shores of lake Winnebago, you are sitting on a large chunk of Uranium 234 (i think thats the one we were sitting on, could be U84 or something like it). this stuff decays and turns into radon gas and eventually seeps up into your basement, known for causing lung cancer. the federal law on this is that you can have at max 4 pcI/L of it in your basement. if you have more than the legal limit, you must spend 800-1000 dollars just to get something to clean it out, or you could open a window and have it flushed out like that, but thats a big problem in the winter.

just thought i should share.

every state has levels of radon http://www.epa.gov/radon/zonemap.html  do you have a link to show your claims? otherwise its just more senseless drivel to add to your post count

Depends on the Uranium Isotope involved, but it sounds like "The U-238 Daisy Chain" to me.   U-238 (Uranium Isotope that is Naturally Occurring) decays into Th-234 (Thorium Iso) via Alpha Decay, which then Beta decays to form Pa-234(Protactinium Iso) for not even two minutes, before Beta decaying again into U-234.   U-234 Alpha decays into Th-230, which then Alpha Decays into Ra-226 (Radium Iso).  Ra-226 then Alpha decays into Rn-222 (Radon Iso).   Rn-222's 1/2 life is less than 4 days.  IIRC from College Chemistry in 1992.

I always enjoyed Chemistry.    It also helped in Mineralogy, which was a PITA itself.   Memorizing the Formulas for Muscovite and others, truly sucks.    But alas, I can pass it on to my son.

The experiments our Govt. did with Plutonium up to the 70's had a greater impact than this.   Those experiments themselves would be a thread for another day.

Since the 80s, I have been telling my friend to never allow guests or kids to sleep in the basement on the floor.

Some didn't listen and one who was a stoner had moved his bedroom to the basement and had a mattress on the floor.    He died of cancer.

Those are only the states, what about the US territories of Guam and Puerto Rico?

About a year ago these people down the street had to have their 100 year old farm demolished because of this

Because of radon gas?     Asbestos, or termites, sure...  But because of radon gas?...  :huh...  as has been said, they could of opened a window (or added one or a vent to their basement) and been rid of the problem before lunch (if it really was a problem, of cource)... what'd they do, treat the lumber in a pressure vessel full of the stuff?

Are you sure about that? the gas doesnt do any physical damage to the house at all, it just does some bad things to humans. If those people had their house destroyed because of this, then my god what the hell did they do?

(BTW-i have an article that says the highest amount of Radon gas found in the 4 counties tested for it in Wisconsin was 240 pcI/L, i will give a pic of it to thy research nazi if thou wishes for it to be present.)

you must spend 800-1000 dollars just to get something to clean it out,

It can be alot more than that, just an FYI.

The system in my home cost about 2500.00

Just paid for one for one of my insureds that had a fire, it was about $4k

It mostly depends on where the system egress(s) from the home, most are foundation or thru the roof.

I was talking about a very simple and basic one, nothing very fancy. just something that will get the job done if the need rises.

I didn't know Radon was some new thing that warranted a fancy solution. There's a whole big Internet out there and you stumbled into your basement somehow?
