JS calibration
« on: December 08, 2011, 05:59:24 PM »
I've researched this some but still do not understand why I have to recalibrate my JS everytime I go into AH.  :furious

I notice a big difference before and after calibration.  :O

:headscratch: Do not understand why it loses calibration.

:headscratch: Do not understand why calibration is even necessary beyond the first time I install the joystick on my computer.

Have LogicTech Extreme Pro-3D.   This is my fourth or fifth one as I tend to wear them out after 3 or 4 months.  (free replacements from BestBuy due to 2 year unlimited warranty :D )

If you've properly calibrated your joystick in Windows and then calibrate both the axis and controllers in Aces High there is no need to calibrate each time you log on.

It might be that your USB root hub / controller is set to go into a suspend or energysaving mode, thus causing your controller to lose its calibration or function at times

like if one was to set their plane on Auto Pilot, or you are on your PC doing other things and the usb port for your controller goes to sleep, causingit to lose its calibration, or something of the like

not sure if this is why you are having to constantly recalibrate, but from your description it sounds like this might be your problem

hope this helps

Thanks for responses.  I have to recalibrate every time I get in the game.  Will try and figure out the USB sleep thing... not sure where to look yet. :headscratch:

Usually in the power settings in your control panel.

Well, after trying this for a couple of days... doesn't seem to help. :frown:

I also notice that when I calibrate in AH, then switch to IE to browse a website (say HTC forums), then return to AH... I need to recalibrate again.  :frown:

Are you running some type of anti-xxx software?  Kill it and try it.

It sounds like files are not being able to be updated in the games 'settings' folder (marked read-only perhaps?).  Some file secutiry type software plays havoc with the game in this manner.

Also note, if the USB bus resets while the computer is on, then it is possible for the controller to get another ID from Windows, in which case, it appears as a new joystick installation to the game.  Nothing we can do about this.

Also note, there is a bug in the game which can cause the joystick settings to be wiped out if you ALT-F4 from the game, instead of using the menu exits.

I use Windows Defender (windows 7 64 bit OS).  I just disabled the real-time protection checkbox.  Will see if that helps.

I do use alt-f4 to exit... so will stop doing that as well.

Thank you.  :salute

Does this bug also exist when I alt-tab out of AH to browse web some and then alt-tab back into AH?  I often have to re-calibrate when I do that. :frown:

No.

Okay, back to basics.

1)  In the options->controls->map controllers panel.  Visually note the X and Y axis values in parantheses, when you are NOT touching the joystick.  If they are not 32767 (or something really close to that value), then there is something wrong with the stick itself as it is not giving correct values to start with.  It will never calibrate.

2)  DO NOT ALT-F4 when you are in the options->controls->map controllers panel or it WILL blow away the entire joystick configuration, requiring you to start over again.

3)  This is a little tricky.  What we are looking for is the actual joystick config file in the game "settings" folder.  See if it exists (it should be the name of the stick).  If it does not, then something is preventing the game from writting that file to the drive.

From the game perspective, joysticks are pretty simple devices.  The game deals with what the operating system gives us.  It really is that simple.

You did not say it is was a wireless stick.  If it is, then that tosses in a whole new level of possibilities on why it is doing this.

(1) Usually one or two axis are not 32767... maybe 32125 or so...  Then  alt-tab out of AH, calibrate with the Logitech calibration program, come back into AH and all three axis are 32767 or 32768.  Then I calibrate using AH calibration option and my joystick then works great until I do one of two things... either leave AH and log for a while or alt-tab to web site (like the forums) for a little while and then come back in.  I'd guess 1/3 of the time my js works fine after I leave AH, the other 2/3s of the time I have to recalibrate based on procedure above.   If I don't leave AH and play for a long time, my js works great (does not lose calibration).  It's only on leaving AH and coming back in that it gets messed up.

My js is about 2 months old... I get a new one every 3 or 4 months because I use it a lot and can tell when it is mechanially not working right anymore  (ie I can't calibrate it at all or my hat switch gets worn out from checking six so often).  I have the BestBuy 2 yr warranty so new jss are free for me.

(2) I've stopped using alt-F4

(3) The file does exist.

It is not wireless... I have it plugged into the back of my desktop via a usb port.

Here is the first part of the file (after having calibrated as described above):

If the joystick file does not exist in the "settings" folder then something is blocking the games ability to write that file.  That file contains all the calibration information as well as the stick settings.

The files will have the ".jsm" extension.  If there are not any in the "settings" folder, then something on your computeris preventing that file (probably others too) from being written, or your computer has the current virus running around which hides files from applications.

The file does exist and one for the mouse also... no problems writing to my computer's c disk.

If the numbers are varying too far from 32765, when the stick is centered, it will never calibrate properly.
