hmmmm i was under the impression that they are removing the old shakes and needed the snow off in a hurry so they could finish the job, if that was the case then the rock salt would not hurt the under laying roof structure, it might leave a residue on the shakes that are going to be torn off, maybe some on the under lament but that's always replaced when the new roofing system is put on, but to put rock salt on a newer roof just to melt the snow i would agree the with rest.  depending on your area's snow load usually determines the roof pitch and material used for the roof.

He never really did say what the job was just that the snow was in they way.

Depending on the amount of snow, there would be no need to remove the snow if the shakes still need to be removed. The snow will come off when you take the shakes off, was the way I looked at that. I was actually thinking there was some other job he had to do on the roof and was just looking for a safe manner to remove the snow without damaging the shakes.

I've installed the v cables before and they work pretty good. The secret is to also run them through the gutter and the down spout.

get a 20 gauge shotgun with target loads and get a good angle. blast the snow away. (only if you have hard tile roofing)

I just did a Mansord Roof not long ago with shakes. It was anything but fun. Of course the house is not in prime location either.

3-4 bucks high on scaffold and extremely uneven terrain. All that and my only partner was a 63 year old man.
