bird repellent
« on: December 10, 2011, 12:19:33 PM »
namely for european starlings. they're nesting in the building where my shop is. they crap on everything. although they're pests/vermin, i'd rather not kill them, but i'm tired of having to wash bird poop off of customers cars before i give it back.

so.......what effective non-lethal ways are there to get rid of these things? i've heard that playing sounds of them in distress will confuse and scare these things off, but not wanting to spend a couple hundred bucks on the ones on the market. i also can't seem to find sound clips.

anyone got any advice, before i start spreading poison around the building and parking lot for them?

If you want to, and are willing to take on a bunch of pissed off birds, try to get rid of the nest itself.

Bird Spikes work good as well for such problems.

Birds hate microwaves. Get a radar gun and pwn them.

Plastic owls are a waste in my experience....targeted bird ends up using the "owl" as a roost. <G>

Can you block the entrances the birds use to get into the building?  some chickenwire or something?

An eagle cost me $500 bucks this spring -- he took the prop off my masthead anemometer.

We should of made the turkey the national symbol, then we could shoot eagles.   :devil

it'd be pretty hard for me to get up there. besides, there's enough nooks and crannys on top of the roof, that they'd just move up there. that's why i'm trying to find somethign to chase em away.

i'm honestly not totally averse to killing them, but i'd rather not have to do that. i just want em to go away. if i have to kill a few dozen of em to make that happen, then i will. i've read about a poison that kills them slowly, so that the affected birds cry in agony. this cry scares the rest away, and once they're broken of that habit, then it's settled. but once again......i don't like the idea of killing anything slowly.

if it were as simple as the noises, i could load the proper sounds on a usb stick, and either play them through my computer, or leave the windows down on my car, and play those sounds through the cars stereo.

i figured we've got a very large, very knowledgeable community here, and for something like this it's a good place to start.

That works for seagulls.  On the seaplane lake here there is a LARGE population of birds -- there have been many birdstrikes.  We were trying to keep the gulls from nesting, an officer assigned to Gull Island in the lake breaking eggs, using noisemakers, and even killing them with shotguns.  We left some of the carcasses hanging on sticks -- the gulls started to get scarce.  However we were right across the channel from an officer building, some bird lovers took offense and that was the end of that!!

Next trip was to put a couple of hogs on the island.  They spend the summer eating gull eggs then were butchered in the fall.    :D

You can try these methods-

Otherwise I do have a starling distress call recording- http://www.4shared.com/audio/QDjM3B1U/Starling_distress.html

ACTually, it's my jeep as far as my personal cars go. i park the stang out where they don't go in the parking lot. there's a toyota with a blown engine that's been setting there for 2 months, with not a drop on it. i park the stang right there. my jeep on the other hand is covered.

yesterday i had to wash off a box truck that is one of a fleet of 4 that this HVAC guy brings to me. they had the hood and windshield covered. same with a guys lexus sc430.

i really can't have this happening to customers cars. it's a waste of my time, waste of water, and worst of all, if a customer sees it, they sure as hell aren't going to appreciate it.
