Saab Saab Saab :(
« on: December 20, 2011, 11:54:17 AM »
 :cry

Gonna hang onto mine as long as I can.  I bought a 2003 9-3 just like the one in the picture last June.   Turbocharged 2.0L with a 6 speed manual, leather interior.  32mpg highway, feels rock solid and safe.   Just so sorry to see them shut down.  New ones are way outta my price range but with a few years and miles on them it's a heckuva lot of car for the $$.   I seriously doubt an 8 yr old KIA or Hyundai will move me half as much as this car did when the time comes.    I really do love the shape of the 9-3 sedan.

Ugh just spent $1500 replacing the rear axle bearings on my Jeep.  Hope the Saab holds up better.

Wonder why the Swedish govt doesn't come to Saabs rescue the way we did for GM?

Because GM owns Saab and didn't want to sell it to a competitor for the GM licensed tech Saab sits on. They'd rather let it die. The Chinese were particularly interested in Saab. They already own Volvo.

Interesting comment considering GM retains a good amount of control over SAAB, so much so that they recently vetoed a deal that very well might kill the brand.

Yeah, but...

What model Jeep, how old, how many miles, how much more do you beat on it than the Saab?

they don't actually own SAAB anymore. Sold off early 2010.

That's true, but they still own a lot of the tech Saab uses.

"On 6 December 2011, GM announced that it would not continue transferring its technology to SAAB if the company had been sold to Pang Da Automobile Trade and Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile since the operation is not in the best interest of GM investors and would cause the Chinese company to unfairly gain access to GM intellectual property. Because of this, Saab started working on a new proposal which wouldn't change the original ownership structure and not include a Chinese partner as an owner of the company, but instead as a 50% owner of a new daughter company.

On 19 December 2011, General Motors continued to block any form of involvement with a Chinese partner because under the new SAAB-Youngman agreement Youngman would still be able to swipe GM IP. Saab officially filed for bankruptcy after a three-year fight for survival, bringing a 64-year-long chapter in Swedish industrial history to an end.[10] Youngman has expressed interest in buying the company and continue production.[72]"

They may not own it but they did a stellar job of destroying it while they did.

SAAB = Something Almost Always Broken

I never did care much for them and they aren't very popular at all in my neck of the woods.  Here they are overpriced and hard to find parts for (and for someone to fix them).  They aren't bad cars just not worth their added cost and headaches around here.
