:lol Forgot the S.

So what's the joke anyway?

Well I kinda figured as opinionated as everyone is here that people would say its either 1 or 9. Some people say to do the implied 2*3 taking authority over the 6/2. 2(3) ia treated as single unit or "number" and is handled as a chunk.

Some people ignore the order of operations, that makes them incorrect.

 6 / 2 (1+2) = x

 6 / 2 (3) = x

 6 / 6 = x

 x = 1

Besides PEMDAS, remember that when you are dividing, you complete all equations above and below the division sign before you actually divide.

You should have divided 6/2 instead of multiplying 2(3).  The mistake I think you're making is you're thinking of 6 being over everything after it like
6
---
2(3)

But that isn't the case, it's really (6/2)*3. Or

(6*3)

 :huh :huh

How do you come up with that assumption?

Original equation was : 6 / 2 (1+2) = x

Which means:

   6
-------
2(1+2)

Just like a book, math is read left to right. With the addition of the parenthesis to 1+2 you have to assume that the 2 is attached, and you must complete the equation on the bottom before proceeding to divide.

In order for the equation to work as you state is would have to look like this:

(6/2)(1+2) = x

Then! Would x = 9, but because there is an absence of a parenthesis around the 6/2, you must assume the equation as I stated above.

Yeah, and there are no parenthesis around 2 (1+2) to indicate it's one number 6 is divided by.  (1+2) is the first operation as dictated by the parenthesis, so we have 6/2(3).  Now follow your own rules and read left to right, 6/2 and then multiply by 3.

6 / 2 (1+2) means
6 (1+2)

6/2(3)

Multiplication: 6/6

The equation does look like (6/2)(1+2), you don't assume anything is attached to anything in math, you follow the order of operations.
6 / 2 (1+2).
Parenthesis?
6/2(3) Check.
Now in the absence of parenthesis you multiply or divide (whichever operation it happens to be) in the order they appear left to right.
3(3).
9.

edit:

Quote
6/2(3)

Precisely, you treat 2(3) as multiplication...because it is.  This is the same as writing 6/2*3, if that makes it more clear.

Omg Flipperk.

6 / 2 (1+2 ) = x

Six, divided by two, TIMES 3.

Six, divided by two. 3

TIMES 3 = 9

x=9

correct

now...

3*4^(-1/3)/2=x

x=?
