Privately Owned WW2 Aircraft
« on: January 06, 2012, 04:50:27 PM »
If you had lots of money to burn, what WW2 aircraft would you buy first?

I would buy a B-17 Flying Fortress either good to go or have one refurbished back to airworthy status.

If I had the money of Gates, Turner, or Buffett, I'd make sure to "spread the wealth" over a number of aircraft and make sure there were enough people to properly restore, repair, and maintain the aircraft I'd be garaging/using.

I'd do my damnedest to find a P40, and I'd my damnedest to commission someone to rebuild (or build from scratch) a Mossi FB Mk IV, a German 109G, and whatever non-P51 aircraft I could fine, really.

I would search until the ends of the earth to find B-17 parts, and then have it restored to flying quality. But add in an extra .50 cal to each waist gun, a chin turret with 4 .50 cals, and a second dorsal turret.

Oh, wait. That's a YB-40 :D

I either would want a P51 or F4U, but I would probably want the P51. Those are probably the 2 easiest airplanes to get parts for

P-61 Black widow, can hold 3 people..and can also navigate well at night. Can also keep flying if one engine craps out.

If it completely 100% had to be a WW2 bird, it would be a P-47D-40.

If were talking any war, i'd take the delicious F4 Phantom.

I would buy a group of aircraft together and donate them back to the museum i belong to. All of the aircraft would be the exact previous aircraft we had but were taken away from us against our will.

The group would include:
1x A20H (currently at 1942 historic aircraft group)
3x B-26's (Akron Canton- MAPS)
1x P-39 (Chino California)
1x P-40 (Akron Canton - MAPS)
1x P-47D (Private owner in Midwest, hasnt flown in years)
1x P-51D (Location Unknown)
1x Storch (Location Unknown)
1x Lysander (Location Unknown)

If i could only buy one aircraft, it would probably be the A-20 since none are flying world wide.
