Fantastic first frame.
« on: January 06, 2012, 11:57:29 PM »
:aok  Well done to all.  Really enjoyed the set up, the focus it provided, the variety and the sneaky cunning opponent worthy of the name!

Brilliant.

Thankyou.

My pleasure!  Had to give you the reference of the general area to film!  If I had smoke, I would have used it.  HEHEHE

@ Dantoo - You did well as CiC!!!  Great leadership.  Even though I didn't make it (had a 3 v 2, me and Rodent57 against 3 Typhoons quickly develop) it had to be one of the better Frames for me.  From planning to execution (my execution) it stayed interesting the entire way.  You never really know just how close the enemy is in a FSO until the DARBARs are all over the map. Kept us guessing and had to adjust (slightly) our route to target. Then just shooting my .45 at a Typhoon as I was trying to get to the water so I could hang out and act as a marker for our RECON effort.  Good job across the board!

Hmm is was weird. A few times while pulling out of a dive my elevator trim wasn't working, missed out on another kill with that.

JG11 had a good time, but our heavy hitters never got in contact with heavy bombers. Instead we wound up tangling with 47s 51s and spits, many of which we shot down of course.  :D So yes, it was sneaky and a lot of guessing had to be made regarding positions and headings. Not really representative of the radar and ground observer network of the time, but nevertheless.

What I see is missing is a rough alt estimate in addition to dar bar. A altitude fix within 5k is reasonable given radar technology of the time, nevermind ground observers. With the short icon ranges we had in F1 this become a problem impossible to overcome and whole squadrons fly right by eachother without making contact.

The little bit of the puzzle that is missing and has to be emulated is the ground control intercept organisations.  They varied amongst nations and changed even more than the tech did as the war progressed.  We enjoy 21st century data links in our AH planes and they need to be dumbed down to get anything near realism.  Planes flying right by without spotting one another is way more realistic than every single intercept being completed.

That does not mean it's something to strive for. It happens anyway, and the ground observers had better ways to relay altitude data than our dar bars of 21st century tech have.

The dar bar last Friday was set on a 2 minute delay (I believe) which does hark back, somewhat, to how the information was relayed to the pilot in the cockpit in WWII in this scenario. Hence dar bar gave a general direction of where the enemy had been but not where they are "now".

Is your issue about "chasing dar bar" as opposed to flying towards what you think may be happening in the FSO scenario as we hunt down each other in occluded skies? I would argue that dar bar is all we have right now in AHII to reflect the scenario set up for that FSO.

cheers

True, but to simulate clouded skies with blindness is not my idea of realistic simulation. If that is all we have then so be it, but it's not really a great way to play the game using non-existent features.

so...  :(

I'm not blaming any on the team tho, or anyone else for that matter, it is what it is. Hopefully we'll see improvements on that front.

The cloudy skies were simulated with the clouds.  WWII level radar was simulated with the general sector wide dar bar with a 2 minute delay.
