City covers some 600 square miles.  Might want to narrow it down a bit like downtown, north, south, east, or west side.  Also do you want just some good home style food, or are you looking to sample one of our fine restaurants?

I can make several recommendations, but as stated already it depends what side of town and what your food preferences are

I hear there's a certain bar, where you can find a man playing pool with one hand. If you beat him you get free margaritas for life.

Angelos http://www.angelospizza-pasta.com/ on Bay Area Blvd if you want some good Pizza or Italian food.  You are near some good sea food restaurants, but since I don't eat sea food I'll leave it to other to recommend some.  Lots of good steak houses, I like Pappa's http://pappasbros.com/location/ on Westheimer, a bit pricey but pretty good.  There are a number of other good steak houses in Houston.

I know of a bunch small Mexican and Chinese Restaurants on the Southwest side.  There are some decent BBQ places in town, but the ones I think are the best are actually a ways out of town.

El Tiempo (Washington St) {somewhat north west side of Hou} offers up excellent Tex-Mex and great Margaritas. Same goes for Molinas Cantina (same area) La Groceria on Washington St is GREAT for Sunday brunch (Mexican) or any other time as well. The Barbacoa tacos are killer.

Steaks-seafood: Pappas (any) or Perry's Steakhouse...which has a double cut pork rib chop that is to die for.

Oddly enough, there's not much really, really good BBQ in Houston but Goode & Co is ok as is Luling's City Market near Galleria.

If you drive by a Whattaburger, stop and grab a few  :devil
And wash it all down with plenty of Shiner Bock  :aok

Doziers in Fulshear (near Katy) and Belleville Meat Mkt (Belleville {northeast of Katy}) are both worth the trip. Authentic Texas BBQ offered up in a no nonsence atmosphere. Stick to the brisket and sausage and keep the sauce OFF the meat.

PS. I'm a chef and a barbecue fanatic so I know of which I speak

That is interesting.  I have found that most Ribs served in Texas are Pork.    :D  Beef Ribs are not that common.
