Im Addicted to this.... after my first time use.
« on: January 10, 2012, 09:11:43 PM »
I finally got to fly this today! IT IS SO SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTT TTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!

Its a 2005 Cessna T182T Skylane. Its got all of 200hrs flight time and 130hours Tach. Its 6 cylinder, 230hp, Turbo Charged luxury rocket. Its got an all leather interior and a G1000 cockpit.

Normally i fly a 172R and the occasional Warrior 3 when a 172 isn't available. Today i was supposed to fly a 172, but my plane wasn't back for my block and they had pulled the 182 down already for me to do a ground school on it after my flight. Well we just did the ground school first and then took it up to fly. I did a power on and power off stall in it, a set of step Turns (a lot harder to do in it due the to very heavy nose), a ILS approach and a VOR approach with two laps in a hold.

Now this was my first high performance flight and my first time using a G1000 other than in FSX. FSX truly did help me a lot especially since I'm coming from a C172R with only a King Avionics/radio stack. My use of the GPS in the 172, is pretty much limited to just DME as that's pretty much all its good for anymore. During the ground we went over the checklist and we played with the G1000 and putting flight plans into it. It seemed like as soon as i got into the plane and fired it up, it just came naturally to me and i was finding everything i needed very simple without much looking.

BUT HOLY toejam IS THAT G1000 AMAZING in what it can do!!! I pulled up the timer on the display to time my outbound course while in the VOR hold only to find out as soon as i passed over the VOR, it tells me to "turn right to the outbound (076 heading) course now". And then instead of flying 1min outbound, it interpolated the winds aloft and had a countdown for me to turn back to the 256 course. Then i watched the map and little inset of the PFD as i turned perfectly on the depicted course for the hold. On the MFD, which has the map, it even showed the radius of the turn which allowed me to be at a bank angle that would keep me perfectly on the course.

I seriously think i had more fun flying this flight than on my first solo flight. The only thing that sucks is we cant solo it :( I cant wait till next week or the following when i start flying it almost exclusively.

Looks like fun! I haven't flown a glass cockpit plane. Why wont they let you solo it after x amount of hours?

Nice! How fast does it cruise?

G1000 is the $h1t! But after a few years with it you will really miss the old "classic" gauges.

Often schools don't let you rent expensive planes on solo bases because the insurance becomes expensive.

Nice, bet it was fun!

Hell, i fly on half broken 172s from 70ies, which have all their instruments showing wrong, from 2 degress on VOR to 10 on ADF. Makes flying IFR approaches more interesting ;)

When are you going to come take me for a ride?

LOM
UKT
DYL

Any of the above are close to me :)

I think this is the straw that broke the camel's back.  I'm now completely sold on the G1000 and there is a 99% chance that I will put one in my experimental once it is time  :rock

Yeah but what if you carry renters insurance?

The 182 of any type is always a highly regarded ride. Compared to the 172 it's something of a step up. I've flown several versions including a 1960 model used for skydiving. Empty with minimum fuel it was a little rocket ship, it felt like it was hanging off the prop, great fun.

Heck at 2100lbs it has a 9to1 hp per lb. The best I can hope for in my skyhawk is 10to1 at 1800lbs. I have 182 envy.

Fabric, steam guages, no GPS, and a tailwheel..

Old school is WAY more fun than the g1000 IMO. I've flown both, and I'll take a Citabria ANY day over a g1000 Cessna 182.
