Where'd you learn that?
Yarbles always told me the 8 was a larger and heavier airframe then the 9.

Very hard for me to fight Shane's LA7 in a Spit8.  The Spit9, he's no problem at all, none, except on rare occasions, that is. :P Shane

The 8 has wing loaded tanks, the 9 doesn't so the roll is heavier until the weight is unloaded.  Airframes are virtually identical.  8 has a larger motor if memory serves from a Guppy/Corky thread...he's the resident Spit knowledge base.  The Seafire has the heaviest spit airframe but has no wing loaded fuel tanks which is why it turns spectacularly if you keep your speed up...Spit V frame with CV rated undercarriage.

The 9 turns better...period.

You are turning the 8 too much...the 8 below 10K should be flown a lot like Shane's LA7 is below 10K...my bet is that you are flying the 8 against Shane like you would fly your 9 against my 9.....Shane's making you turn yourself into a knot....fly that 8 vertically against Shane and don't worry about the angles until you get him slower....make him miss on passes by just enough so you keep your speed up....when you get him below 200 indicated, then start getting more aggressive with you turns and angles....if you let him keep his speed up, he'll eat you alive in the 8 because you get slower quicker than he does...my problem with Shane is I never know its Shane until its too late, lol

Calling a Spit8 an insufficient turner compared to the Spit9 is like calling a Camaro a slow car because you are used to driving a Lamborghini.

8 is a bit heavier due to the retractable tail wheel and the two leading edge fuel tanks.  It also has the larger rudder.  In terms of turning, I think it would depend on what alt the fight was at, as the Spit IX engine we have is the Merlin 61 geared for more high altitude flying and the VIII has the Merlin 66 which was best suited for medium to low alt flying.  Later IXs also had this same engine.  The XVI has the American made Packard Merlin 266 which is the same as the Rolls Royce made Merlin 66.

Personally I'd take the VIII over the IX because of the better engine suited to the AH altitudes where there fights.  In the end I'd say the winner of a VIII vs IX fight would be determined by the pilot, not the plane.

Maybe....but the camaro is a slow car compared to the Lamborghini....whether your used to it or not.   I never said it was insufficient...unless its flying against the Wmaker super-redesigned, vastly improved, HGH injected Finnish Brewster Buffalo.

I haven't been able to get the 8 to perform that way on the deck yet...it's probably just flight time I guess...I don't have much time in the 8.  The 8 is certainly faster on the deck...I haven't caught one in a 9 yet either, lol

Very helpfully, very helpfully indeed.  I'll get Shane's LA7 in my Spit8, if it's the last thing I do.  :joystick:

OK here is a challenge

Land 5 air kills in a c47 and I will change my handle to Midssqueak...post the film and they have to be from the MA and not squaddies on other side "giving" the kills.

Take the 8 up at furball lake some time and play with all the 16s.  They think they can turn with you right until they drop a wing and you kill em :)

I landed 3 in a C47 once...  One of the three was even a 262.

It was the most wtg's and <S>'s I've ever gotten after landing kills.
